It is within this context that CHEO is seeking a Director, Office of Indigeneity, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access and Social justice (I-IDEAS) to join their leadership team.

CHEO is built on un-ceded Algonquin Anishinaabeg territory and is one of the few stand-alone, global leaders in paediatric healthcare and is home to approximately 4,500 staff, medical staff, and learners and volunteers dedicated to helping children and youth live their best lives. Ranked in the top 1% of Canadian hospitals for the digitization of its clinical infrastructure, CHEO combines excellence in clinical care, research, and education to advance seamless care where, when, and how it is needed. Every year, CHEO helps more than 500,000 children and youth from Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Nunavut, and Northern Ontario.

Reporting to the VP Strategy, Quality and Family Partnerships & CIO, and working closely with t he CEO, the Director leads the development and execution of CHEO’s I-IDEAS Strategy. As a member of the Executive Team, this role drives the integration of Indigeneity, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Social Justice across all aspects of CHEO’s operations—from governance and culture to care delivery, education, and research.

The Director collaborates with staff, medical staff, volunteers, learners, families, and community partners to advance health equity, French language services, Indigenous engagement, and workforce representation. They champion initiatives that foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all who work at or receive care from CHEO. The Director supports alignment with legislation and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. They also have a key leadership role in organizational planning, training, and development to eliminate barriers, prevent discrimination, and build a culture of belonging.

As the ideal candidate, you possess a university degree in a relevant field or a combination of education and extensive relevant experience developing, implementing, and managing I-IDEAS programs and teams. Lived experience as a member of diverse community and ability to bring your distinct perspectives to impact your work would be an asset when applying. You are a thoughtful and collaborative leader with skills and experiences that will prepare you for this role, such as:

Strong vision and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenous reconciliation in healthcare.
Proven ability to build respectful partnerships with Indigenous communities and other groups marginalized by the health system.
Understanding of social determinants of health, human rights, and intersectionality.
Demonstrated leadership in driving organizational change and dismantling systemic barriers.
Experience co-developing programs with Indigenous and diverse communities using culturally grounded approaches.
Skilled in consensus-building and consultation within complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
Experience applying participatory methods and wise practices aligned with I-IDEAS
Track record of building team capacity through inclusive training and development.
Ability to design and support implementation of systems of accountability that support culturally safe care and inclusive environments.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust across differences and communicate with empathy and clarity.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; active listening and relationship-building across the organization - patients/families, front-line staff, physicians, nurses, senior management, learners, scientists, and the Board alike.
Bilingual capacity in English and French and ability to communicate in other languages, including sign language is an asset.

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.
