The Job!

We’re looking for an experienced Database Expert to conduct a full assessment of our current PostgreSQL environment and guide us through the design and optimization of our future database architecture. This is a hands-on, short-term engagement for someone who can quickly understand complex systems, identify performance and reliability issues, and provide clear, actionable recommendations for improvement.

Perform a comprehensive health check and assessment of the current PostgreSQL database environment
Review performance, scalability, security, and operational practices
Identify bottlenecks, configuration issues, and opportunities for improvement
Develop recommendations and a high-level design for a future-state database architecture aligned with business and technical goals
Advise on best practices for data management, backup and recovery, monitoring, and automation
Collaborate with internal stakeholders and technical teams to ensure recommendations are practical and well-understood
Optionally assist in early implementation or knowledge transfer to internal staff

What you bring to the job

You are someone with several years of hands-on experience in database administration, design, and optimization, with a strong focus on PostgreSQL. You are comfortable working independently in a consulting-style capacity and come with the following:

Solid understanding of database performance tuning, indexing strategies, query optimization, and storage management
Experience with high availability, replication, and backup/recovery strategies in Postgres
Familiarity with cloud-hosted database environments (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or similar) is a plus
Strong analytical and communication skills — able to translate technical findings into clear business recommendations
Familiarity with data security standards and compliance requirements
Broader knowledge of database technologies (MySQL, Oracle, etc.) for comparative insight
