Position Title: Internal Medicine Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT)
Reports to: Internal Medicine Team Lead

About the Opportunity

Boreal Veterinary Centre's Internal Medicine Department is continuing to grow, and we are seeking an additional Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) to support our expanding caseload and service offerings. This position has been created to help maintain our commitment to exceptional patient care, client service, and team collaboration as demand for our specialty services increases.

This role follows a rotating Monday to Friday schedule, with 10-hour shifts scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Prerequisites

Active member of the ABVMA and ABVTA
Ability to lift 50 lbs (22 kg)
A desire to grow the RVT profession
Confidence with basic RVT skills including patient monitoring, venipuncture, and IV catheter placement
Proficiency with monitoring equipment (pulse oximetry, ECG, capnography, etc.)
Willingness to create opportunities for themselves, the hospital, and their patients
Intent to share knowledge and expertise with others to elevate them
Ability to provide constructive feedback to the Internal Medicine team and Management
Excellent communication, critical thinking, and time-management skills
Commitment to ongoing education and professional development
Ability to be on time and prepared to work at the beginning of your scheduled shift
Working Conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, animal vomit, urine, blood or feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.

Position Summary

This role is a partnership and collaboration with veterinarians to provide gold standard medical care to our Internal Medicine patients. As a medical professional, you are expected to contribute your medical expertise to each case, to contribute at rounds and to mentor other members of this team (veterinarians and veterinary students included). All RVTs are encouraged to advocate for themselves and their career.

In addition to the general RVT duties, this position may require cross-training in other specialty departments such as Surgery/Anesthesia, Oncology, and Cardiology, as needed.

Essential Job Functions

Conduct physical examinations and patient assessments
Calculate, draw, and administer oral and injectable medications
Supervise and support Animal Care Assistants with their patient care
Effectively communicate with clients via phone, email, and in person
Generate estimates and review informed consent with clients
Administer, monitor, and recover patients from anesthesia
Perform medical procedures as prescribed by the veterinarian
Perform venipuncture and catheter placements
Use in-house laboratory equipment and submission reference laboratory tests as needed
Obtain quality images with Xray, CT, Fluoroscopy or ultrasound
Perform advanced diagnostic tests including scopes
Administer Radioactive Iodine and care for I131 hospitalized patients
Fill prescriptions, relay orders for compounded medications
Admit and set- up patients for hospitalization and transfer to ICU
Manage hospitalized patients, perform recovery care and additional specialized treatments
Assist DVMs with appointments
Perform tech appointments
Triage patients
Double check aftercare for the Animal Care Attendants
Assist with maintenance and quality control of equipment
Mentor and support other members of the veterinary team
Contribute suggestions to improve hospital flow and patient care
Maintain detailed and accurate medical records
Other tasks as deemed necessary
