About The Role
As a Holiday Relief Firefighter, you will replace permanent firefighters as needed and contribute to providing essential emergency services. This position requires flexibility, as you will work 24-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays, and may be called in on short notice. While HRFF positions are casual, most employees work full-time hours (approximately 11 months per year) depending on operational needs. HRFF are also eligible to participate in the employee benefits package.
Selected candidates will be required to undergo physical fitness and medical evaluations. Candidates who are successful in the preliminary evaluation will complete a seven-to-eight-week paid training program at the Saint John Fire Department Training Centre. Upon successful completion a selected number of applicants will be offered a position as HRFF. Once hired you will serve a 12-month probationary period.

Essential Qualifications
- Minimum of Grade 12 education or equivalent education
- Firefighter Level I and Firefighter Level II (IFSAC or Pro Board Accredited) before employment as a HRFF. Applicants holding FF I & FF II certificates without the IFSAC or Pro Board accreditation are encouraged to apply. SJFD can assist in navigating the accreditation process. - Valid Driver’s License. A minimum of Class 5 is required. Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Class 3E within six (6) months of employment
- Oral Proficiency level of intermediate in English as determined by the Province of New Brunswick
Note: SJFD will provide opportunities for applicants selected for the fitness assessment to visit the training grounds to become familiar with equipment and requirements prior to testing.
