SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Under the general supervision of the Senior Project Manager – Transit Infrastructure, the Transit Infrastructure Attendant is responsible for ensuring all bus stop infrastructure assets are maintained in a safe, clean, and serviceable condition. This position coordinates and monitors maintenance and repair activities performed by contractors, conducts regular field inspections, and ensures accurate recordkeeping of maintenance activities and asset data within the transit infrastructure inventory system. In addition to coordinating work, the Attendant may also perform minor maintenance tasks directly, such as installing or adjusting signage, cleaning shelters, snow removal, grass cutting, weeding, replacing damaged components, or addressing minor repairs to support timely upkeep and ensure assets remain in a state of good repair.
GENERAL DUTIES
Infrastructure Maintenance and Inspection
Conducts regular inspections of transit infrastructure assets, including shelters, signage, posts, and amenities, to assess condition and identify maintenance needs.
Performs minor maintenance and upkeep of on-street transit infrastructure, including applying stop information decals, updating info-posts, tightening loose components, and removing litter, unauthorized postings, or graffiti.
Assists with preventive maintenance programs for shelters, signage, and related infrastructure assets.
Reports hazards or damage (e.g., vandalism, safety risks, or accessibility concerns) and takes immediate
corrective action where feasible.
Maintains an inventory of materials, parts, and supplies required for routine field maintenance activities.
Monitors to ensure contractor maintenance and repair work meets quality, safety, and accessibility standards.
Data Management and Administration
Assists with updates and data entry within the transit infrastructure asset inventory database.
Prepares and maintains accurate field records, logs, and reports of inspections, maintenance, and repair activities.
Assists with the preparation of inspection summaries, deficiency reports, and maintenance work orders.
Supports data quality improvements within the asset management system to ensure information remains current and accurate.
Planning and Project Support
Supports the Transit Technologist III with the planning and administration of new and existing bus stops, bus stop amenities, and route end-of-line locations.
Assists with the creation, placement, and removal of signage related to route detours, temporary service changes, and transit infrastructure upgrades.
Supports special projects, accessibility initiatives, and pilot programs related to transit infrastructure improvements.
Safety, Compliance, and Customer Service
Ensures all work is performed in accordance with City safety procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, MTO Book 7 and other applicable regulations.
Identifies and appropriately handles hazardous materials encountered in the field, including reporting SHARPS or other dangerous items for proper disposal.
Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the job tasks being performed and ensures others follow safety protocols.
Participates in safety meetings, training sessions, and workplace audits to promote a safe working environment.
Provides courteous and professional responses to public inquiries related to bus stop infrastructure conditions.
Represents the City of Hamilton in the field when interacting with contractors, consultants, or other City divisions.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor that are consistent with the normal scope of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, and Outlook) for word processing, data entry, and spreadsheet management; experience with data manipulation and reporting considered an asset.
- Experience working with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) and asset management databases or tools for mapping, inspection tracking, and data updates.
- Previous experience performing minor repairs or maintenance on infrastructure assets or similar field equipment.
- Basic knowledge and practical ability in the safe use of hand tools, battery operated landscaping equipment, ladders, and related equipment.
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout all four seasons.
- Demonstrated willingness to learn on the job and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with peers, supervisors, and members of the public.
- Availability to work day, night, and weekend shifts as operationally required.
- Proven ability and willingness to assume responsibility and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence and a driving record satisfactory to the City of Hamilton.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations as they apply to the position.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects independently, up to 50 lbs (approximately 23 kg).
- Ability to successfully complete all required corporate and position-specific training (e.g., MTO Book 7 – Temporary Conditions, WHMIS, Ladder Safety).
