Reporter-Editor, Ontario – Full-Time – Internal-external
The Canadian Press is hiring a full-time journalist to join the Ontario bureau. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to craft a wide range of stories for a national audience. They will have excellent news judgment, pitch original ideas and bring speed, accuracy and creativity to their coverage. This role encompasses regular weekend shifts and three days a week working with a team of reporters and editors at our Toronto headquarters.
Responsibilities:
- Report on a wide variety of assignments, with a focus on breaking news in Ontario
- Produce multimedia stories for print, online, audio and video
- Generate original story ideas, with a focus on under-reported communities
- Take interesting local stories and make them nationally relevant
- Work creatively and concisely under tight deadline pressure
- Serve as the primary breaking news reporter in Toronto on weekends
- Be available for occasional evening work
Skills and experience required:
- Journalism degree or equivalent experience
- Three years of experience working in a real-time, digital newsroom
- Familiarity with CP Stylebook and Caps and Spelling
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Superior research skills, including in using social media as a newsgathering tool
- Copyediting experience is an asset
- Bilingualism is an asset but not required
