Project Description
Our client is undertaking a major data modernization initiative to clean and migrate a Fibre Database from Microsoft Access to a secure, cloud-based platform that will improve cross-team data sharing and enhance security. This work also includes integrating fibre data into an in-house Telecom Authorization System built on Ruby on Rails (TAS), managing GIS uploads in Smallworld, and adding data layers into ArcGIS for spatial analysis and mapping.
To support this initiative, our client is seeking an GIS Application Support Specialist who can provide hands-on technical support, assist with data preparation and migration activities, collaborate with developers, and ensure accurate documentation and system integration throughout the project lifecycle.
Experience and Role Accountabilities
• Minimum three (3) years of experience in IT Business Application Support, production support, or system upgrade environments.
• Monitor, investigate, resolve, and document application issues by delivering high-quality support services across multiple applications while adhering to organizational standards and guidelines.
• Provide timely and accurate updates by creating, updating, and closing support tickets and responding to customer issues within expected service levels.
• Deliver regular reporting on request volumes and service metrics to ensure work is progressing according to plan.
• Collaborate with business teams, developers, and external vendors to troubleshoot system issues, support integrations, and provide status updates to project leads.
• Contribute to application enhancements, version upgrades, and operational improvements to ensure systems remain reliable and sustainable.
• Provide technical guidance to users and sustainment teams to build capability and ensure effective system adoption.
Specialized Role Requirements for This Project
• Strong data analysis, cleaning, and preparation skills, particularly for migration activities.
• Experience working with software development teams (preferably Ruby on Rails) for integration and data transformation work.
• Familiarity with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS; experience with Smallworld GIS is an asset.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Access and other MS Office tools (Word, Excel, Visio).
• Ability to produce clear functional documentation, training materials, and testing artifacts.
• Experience designing or supporting integrations into custom applications (e.g., TAS).
• Preferred: Background in utilities, engineering, software development, fibre optics, or telecom environments.
• Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal abilities.
Education and Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Advanced MS Office skills, including Access, Excel, Word, and Visio.
• Strong adherence to quality standards and documentation practices (ISO 9000 experience considered an asset).
• Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues.
