The Compensation Manager supports the planning, development, implementation, and administration of the organization’s total rewards programs. This role focuses on annual compensation cycles, salary administration, bonus programs, job evaluation, pay equity compliance, budgeting, and working with HR and leaders to ensure consistent and fair compensation practices across both unionized and non-union groups.
Roles and Responsibilities
Compensation Program Administration
- Support the execution of a comprehensive compensation strategy aligned with company goals and compensation philosophy.
- Provide salary recommendations that ensure internal equity and external competitiveness.
- Maintain salary administration guidelines, policies, and processes that promote transparency and consistency.
- Generate compensation and merit letters using mail merge tools.
- Partner with Talent Acquisition to support competitive and equitable offer development.
- Work with the Benefits team to support smooth coordination of total rewards programs.
- Support vendor relationships and ensure value and service expectations are met.
- Monitor legislative changes that impact compensation practices and ensure compliance.
Pay Equity & Compliance
- Monitor and maintain pay equity for both union and non-union groups in accordance with the Ontario Pay Equity Act.
- Conduct parity reviews and support job evaluation outcomes required for compliance.
- Ensure all compensation practices follow relevant regulatory requirements.
- Support preparation of pay transparency reporting as required by legislation.
Annual Compensation Cycle (Merit & Bonus)
- Lead the annual merit, salary review, and bonus cycles, ensuring accurate and consistent application of salary structures and guidelines.
- Track recommendations, identify discrepancies, and ensure alignment with budgets.
- Collaborate with Finance and HR during budgeting season.
- Prepare presentations and materials for leadership review as needed.
- Support bonus cycle administration and ensure metrics and outcomes are applied correctly.
Job Evaluation & Job Documentation
- Lead job evaluation processes to maintain internal equity across all roles.
- Benchmark and classify positions within established frameworks.
- Maintain consistent job titling conventions, templates, and documentation standards.
- Support leaders and HR partners in preparing and maintaining job descriptions.
Qualifications and Skills
- 5+ years of progressive experience in Compensation or Total Rewards within mid-to-large organizations
- Experience working in unionized environments is required.
- Experience supporting full annual compensation cycles, including merit increases, bonus administration, and salary review processes.
- Familiarity with job evaluation, job documentation, and maintaining salary structures.
- Understanding of pay equity legislation and experience conducting parity checks or pay equity maintenance reviews.
