Mill HMI/PLC Programmer
Reporting to the Mill Electrical Supervisor, the Mill HMI/PLC Programmer is primarily responsible for all aspects of the mills Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programs as well as ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation while maintaining compliance to provincial and federal codes and standards. They must be a committed team player with a strong knowledge and dedication to safety, production methods and equipment care. Other duties will be assigned as per operational needs.

requirements of the position.
Operational / Technical Execution
- Design, develop and maintain PLC programs for industrial automation systems.
- Collaborate with contractors, engineers and technicians to determine the requirements and specifications of the project.
- Debug and troubleshoot PLC programs to ensure proper functionality.
- Implement changes and updates to the PLC programs as required by the project.
- Create and maintain documentation of all PLC programs and related processes.
- Provide technical support and training to end-users and maintenance personnel.
- Stay up to date with the latest developments in PLC technology and recommend improvements to existing systems.
- Skilled in configuring and programming human machine interfaces for monitoring and control.
- Responsible for the electrical infrastructure and providing the preventative and predictive efforts to ensure that our Mill meets operating cost and availability targets.
- Ensure all electrical systems are operating effectively by following a regular maintenance program.
- Ensure minimal downtime in production schedules by repairing HMI, PLC issues promptly and efficiently.
- Execute preventive maintenance activities and work towards reliability excellence.
- Maintain HMI, PLCs across the operation.
- Liaise with operations to identify and correct reliability and productivity issues and/or participate in root cause analysis.
- Involvement in business improvements regarding automation and innovation in all electrical aspects.
- Organize the modernization process of current automation system used within Mill.
General Administration and Controls
- Conduct audits of systems, equipment, and maintenance programs on a regular basis.
- Maintain all documentation, drawings and plans for equipment, up to date as changes are made.
- Keep accurate maintenance and repair records, ensuring any changes to programming are accurately documented.
- Participate in safety and other crew meetings, training, and education to workers on regulations in relevant areas such as the OH&S Act.
- Participate in daily/weekly planning meetings.
- Participate in safety programs.
- Lead by example, demonstrating a strong commitment to safety, quality of work, and efficiency. Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to the mill team, ensuring high standards of performance and fostering a positive, safety-focused work environment.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Works in compliance with McEwen Ontario’s safety rules and the internal responsibility system.
- Comply with all Safety, Health, Environmental and other policies, procedures, and requirements.
- Utilize a CMMS software to track maintenance and create work orders.
Qualifications and Skills Requirement
- Legal to work within Canada.
- Must hold a valid Ontario Driver’s License.
- Proven experience as a PLC programmer (industrial preferred) for at least 3 years.
- Familiarity with reading electrical schematics and prints is necessary.
- 5 - 10 years of experience, preferably in a mill/mining or similar environment is required.
- Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems.
- Self-starter with a solid technical background and proven troubleshooting skills.
- Proficient with Data Analysis, showcasing capability of analyzing and interpreting data from PLC.
- Vast knowledge of HMI and PLC hardware.
- Proficient in programming, troubleshooting and maintaining PLC systems.
- Experienced in developing and implementing industrial automation systems.
- Good safety knowledge and understanding with the ability to recognize hazards and situations that may cause problems.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and presentation skills.
- The ability to work positively with a team of professional and technical people in a changing, creative and energetic environment.
- Available to work outside normal scheduled hours (when required) including remotely from home based on Mill’s operating needs.
- Proficient with computer software and all Microsoft applications, CMMS Software.
