About the opportunity:
The Maintenance/Engineering Manager is accountable for the Engineering team, driving technical solutions and managing company capital plan; and developing and directing technical business strategies in support of overall business goals. As well as provides technical support for strategic analysis and provides technical advice as required to Purchasing, Marketing, Quality Assurance, Research and Development, and Engineering.
In addition, the Maintenance/Engineering Manager participates in the planning and control for key plant deliverables such as Utilities, Environmental regulation, Short- & Long-term Capital Plan, and CI/ROI Plan. This position also actively supports the Plant Maintenance Department and participates in trouble shooting of Plant Quality, Safety, and Productivity issues and is a key player in the overall plant process optimization
The attributes we are looking for:
- Drive technical solutions and provide leadership/directions to project teams responsible for execution. Interact with all functional groups to ensure correct project scope, goals and targets are understood and agreed upon.
- Ensure that all relevant activities are conducted in compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements and good business standards. Problem-solve and act as primary decision maker in department issues, including Facility, Emergency Response, Project Start Up, Engineering (as built design vs. theoretical).
- Provide leadership to improve health and safety performance by being a role model in safety and demonstrating due diligence through applying the corporate health & safety program elements. These focus on incident prevention through hazard identification, implementing necessary controls, training, education, and audits. Where necessary, take corrective action to address unsafe situations and employee behaviors, uphold Lactalis’s cardinal and other safety rules and procedures, and communicate with appropriate resources to address any hazardous conditions or unsafe employee conduct.
- Endorse operational resource effectiveness: effective use of available resources in formulization optimization, effective use of utilities, reduce product losses, and improve filler efficiency.
- Plan, direct, and operate capital projects, including capital budgets (ensuring procedures are in place to monitor performance against budgets)
- Troubleshoot technical and quality issues at the plant.
- Implement equipment strategies including sourcing and standardization thereof.
- Develop business plans to resolve maintenance and production-related issues based on business knowledge and where necessary, seek appropriate approvals to implement solutions within the time and budgetary constraints.
- Provide leadership with respect to environmental/safety procedures as required by internal/external parties. Motivate staff and provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project management, recognizing the as that of both manager and support resource/mentor.
- Manage the department's budget by controlling, monitoring and justifying expenditures versus plan and manage accordingly.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, empowerment, and capability.
- Develop short and long term plan for Capital, CI/ROI and Utilities.
- Ensure the plant complies with all environmental regulations.
- Responsible in building Engineering capacity through managing outsourcing, Internal talent development and providing key linkages with local technical teams.
- Lead maintenance group with new concepts/programs relating to predictive and preventative maintenance, fuel focus within cost reduction methods/practices.
What you will bring:
- University degree (Engineering, or Equivalent)
- Minimum ten (10) years’ experience in a leadership position (maintenance and project engineering, with production experience an asset)
- Manufacturing experience within food-related processing and high-speed packaging systems
- Knowledge of maintenance systems, mechanical & process engineering, electrical, instrumentation, PLC, and SCADA Controls. Ability to effectively operate AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of sanitation requirements, as well as Dairy industry/related manufacturing knowledge
- Ability to develop innovative solutions to business challenges. Ability to apply best practices in operations management: Asset effectiveness, reduction in cycle times, TPM, TSM, flexibility of the workforce, etc.
- Strong planning, analytical, organizational and problem solving skills
- Change management skills, conflict resolution skills
- Sound negotiation skills as well as financial and budgetary skills.
- Knowledge of regulatory codes and regulations (HACCP, Health and Safety, CFIA, TSSA), food industry, and food science
- Strong organizational, analytical, presentation skills, and problem solving
- Proficient with standard office computer technology such as Lotus Notes, and Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), as well as business systems such as SAP
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
