We are seeking a Professional Surface Water Engineer for an exciting opportunity. The Surface Water Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise and operational support for the design, construction, maintenance, and surveillance of surface water infrastructure. This role ensures effective surface water management through coordination of modeling, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure planning, with a focus on environmental protection and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate for this position is and Intermediate to Senior level Engineer with 5 to 10+ years experience.
This position will be a full-time local based role in Calgary working 5 days (40 hours) per week. We are seeking a candidate that can start in this role for early Q1-2026.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Support, Planning, and Design:
- Provide specialized engineering support for the design, construction, and maintenance of surface water management infrastructure, including but not limited to drainage ponds, ditches, and trenches.
- Develop and evaluate proposals for system enhancements or the implementation of additional surface water mitigation infrastructure, based on performance data, regulatory requirements, and site development plans.
- Develop engineered designs for ditches and trenches to facilitate the conveyance of closed-loop surface water within existing and future operational areas.
- Contribute to strategic planning of surface water systems to ensure compliance, functionality, and environmental performance.
System Surveillance:
- Conduct structured surveillance of surface water systems through continuous observation, data acquisition, and performance analysis to validate system integrity and effectiveness.
- Collaborate with the Surface Water Science function to integrate water chemistry data into surveillance assessments, evaluating implications for system performance.
- Prepare and submit comprehensive monthly surveillance reports detailing the status and performance of surface water mitigation systems, in alignment with regulatory reporting requirements and internal processes.
- Coordinate hydrological and hydraulic modeling activities to support operational decision-making and the design of future surface water mitigation infrastructure.
- Advance system surveillance capabilities by proposing telemetry-based monitoring solutions and integrated data analytics platforms to enhance real-time performance assessment and decision support
System Operations:
- Communicate proposed modifications or operational adjustments to surface water infrastructure to the Tailings General Foreman (GF) and relevant stakeholders, ensuring alignment with site-wide water management strategies.
- Provide engineering support for diagnostic assessments and resolution of operational issues affecting surface water conveyance and containment systems.
- Develop and evaluate proposals for system enhancements or the implementation of additional surface water mitigation infrastructure, based on performance data, regulatory requirements, and site development plans.
- Coordinate revisions to the Operations and Maintenance System (O&MS) Manual to incorporate updated engineering standards, operational procedures, and infrastructure modifications, ensuring documentation reflects current best practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineerin g (or related field).
- Registration with APEGA as a P.Eng.
- Experience with oilsands mining is an asset, especially oilsands surface water management
- Experience in surface water management, hydrology, or environmental engineering.
- Familiarity with surface water modeling tools and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Strong communication and coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams.
- Successful completion of background reference checks, as well as verification of education, credentials, and legal ability to work in Canada
