We are growing and growing fast! We are adding to our ranks in order to create a great work life balance for all. This role is a permanent full-time position in our Waterloo office.
What does a typical day look like for our Airfield Lighting Designer?
Your day starts in our Waterloo office where you are collaborating with our Project Engineers and Project Managers in the design and project management of airfield electrical infrastructure projects for private airports, regional and international airports. Specifically, most of your time is spent designing power distribution, runway/taxiway ground lighting, runway approach lighting, airfield guidance signs, field electrical centers and associated project components through the development of design drawings, design documentation and technical reports.
Additional duties would include:
- Assist in the development and preparation of figures, design drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, technical reports, etc.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current Transport Canada, ICAO, FAA and related standards and recommended practices.
- Provide QA/QC for in-progress and completed designs.
- Undertake research activities to identify and develop potential solutions to design challenges associated with airfield facility design/construction.
- Inspect project sites to evaluate contractor work to determine compliance with Contract Documents.
What do we need from you?
Our best fit for this role would be a self-starter who has experience in airfield electrical engineering and is known for seeing ahead of the curve, getting in front of problems before they arise.
Required skills and experience we are seeking:
- Electrical Technologist or Electrical Engineering Degree.
- Solid understanding of electrical theory.
- Proficient in AutoCAD as well as the MS Office suite of programs (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to learn new concepts quickly.
- Ability and resourcefulness to work independently.
- Interest in aviation with a keen interest in becoming involved in design of airport infrastructure.
- Strong people skills with the ability to work in cross functional teams and with remote co-workers.
- Willingness to travel.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Additional skills and experience:
- Experience with outdoor electrical infrastructure design, ex. direct buried conduit/cabling, streetlighting, highway lighting, traffic signals, sports field lighting, outdoor power distribution, municipal servicing, associated wiring installations.
- Experience with power distribution, ex. electrical center infrastructure, generators, transformers, panel boards, single line diagrams, associated wiring installation.
- AutoCAD drafting experience.
- Electrical design experience, ex. Photometric analysis, voltage drop calculation and circuiting design, power distribution design, wire sizing, indoor and outdoor wire/conduit routing design, fiber optic cabling design, transformer and service sizing.
