Title: Principal Platform Engineer – Infrastructure Automation
Start Date: Immediately
# of Positions: 1
Position Type: Full Time/ Contract
Location : Remote across Canada
About the Role
We are looking for a Principal Platform Engineer to lead the design and evolution of our infrastructure automation platform. This is a highly impactful role where you will serve as the subject matter expert for platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps practices, and automation. You will work closely with product, security, and software engineering teams to establish golden path workflows, infrastructure standards, and operational practices that enable secure, efficient, and self-service infrastructure delivery.
You will be responsible for designing and implementing infrastructure capabilities across compute, storage, networking, and security domains. Your work will establish platform engineering principles, define infrastructure lifecycle management, and create self-service capabilities that reduce time-to-infrastructure while maintaining strong security and operational standards. You will work alongside a Principal Software Engineer who implements the software stack, while you focus on infrastructure architecture, platform engineering, and DevOps excellence.
Key Responsibilities
As a Principal Platform Engineer and infrastructure lead, you will:
- Own infrastructure architecture and design for platform capabilities, ensuring they meet reliability, security, and operational requirements across compute, storage, networking, and IAM domains.
- Lead the design and implementation of infrastructure as code using Terraform, OpenTofu, and similar tools, including module design, state management, and infrastructure automation patterns.
- Define and document golden path workflows for common infrastructure operations, establishing standardized processes for provisioning, lifecycle management, scaling, and decommissioning.
- Architect container, virtualization, and bare metal infrastructure including Kubernetes, CNI, hypervisors, PXE boot, and data center infrastructure.
- Design networking and security infrastructure including VPC architecture, network policies, security groups, load balancing, and multi-region strategies.
- Drive platform engineering standards for infrastructure as code, DevOps practices, security hardening, and operational procedures, ensuring they are adopted across teams.
- Mentor and grow infrastructure engineers, providing clear technical direction on platform engineering principles, DevOps practices, and infrastructure architecture.
- Continuously improve platform capabilities by identifying infrastructure gaps, evaluating new technologies and practices, and driving adoption of platform engineering principles.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of infrastructure/platform engineering experience, including substantial time designing and operating large-scale infrastructure platforms in production.
- Proven track record as a technical lead or principal engineer for platform engineering initiatives, cloud infrastructure programs, or DevOps transformation efforts.
- Deep expertise in cloud infrastructure primitives including compute, storage, networking, and IAM across major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP, or private cloud platforms).
- Expert-level proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools including Terraform and OpenTofu, including module design, state management, and advanced IaC patterns.
- Strong experience with virtualization technologies including hypervisors, VM lifecycle management, virtualization platform setup, and data center virtualization infrastructure.
- Experience with bare metal infrastructure including bare metal provisioning, PXE boot, hardware lifecycle management, and physical server infrastructure.
- Deep knowledge of container technologies and orchestration including Docker, Kubernetes, CNI, container runtimes, and container networking.
- Strong Linux expertise including deep understanding of Linux internals, system administration, kernel concepts, filesystems, and process management.
- Solid understanding of networking concepts including VPC design, network policies, security groups, load balancing, DNS, and multi-region networking.
- Strong knowledge of configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef, Puppet) and infrastructure automation patterns for drift detection and remediation.
- Experience with infrastructure observability including metrics, logging, alerting, and operational monitoring for platform operations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and to influence infrastructure architecture and platform engineering practices beyond a single team.
- Solid understanding of systems architecture, cloud landscapes, infrastructure and virtualization systems, data center infrastructure, and multi-region deployment strategies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building internal developer platforms, infrastructure automation frameworks, or platform engineering programs that enable self-service infrastructure with strong guardrails.
- Background in multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environments with experience designing infrastructure abstractions and consistent patterns across different cloud providers.
- Advanced Terraform and OpenTofu expertise including complex module design, state management at scale, workspace management, and advanced IaC patterns.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes including cluster design, CNI plugins, network policies, storage classes, RBAC, and Kubernetes operators.
- Experience with container networking and service mesh technologies including CNI implementations, service mesh architecture, and container networking patterns.
- Advanced bare metal infrastructure expertise including Pixie boot systems, automated bare metal provisioning, hardware inventory management, and physical infrastructure lifecycle automation.
- Experience with data center infrastructure design and operations including power and cooling, rack layout, network cabling, and data center best practices.
- Deep knowledge of virtualization platform setup and configuration including hypervisor installation, cluster configuration, storage backend setup, and virtualization infrastructure optimization.
- Experience with Linux-based infrastructure patterns including systemd, init systems, package management, and Linux security hardening practices.
- Experience designing and implementing backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies including snapshot management, backup automation, and recovery procedures.
- Strong background in infrastructure security including security hardening, vulnerability management, and secure infrastructure design patterns.
- Prior experience in enterprise environments where you have helped shape platform engineering practices, infrastructure standards, and technical strategy.
What We're Looking For
- Platform engineering expertise: You are the subject matter expert for platform engineering principles, cloud infrastructure, DevOps practices, and automation, and help others understand and apply these concepts.
- Infrastructure excellence mindset: You care about reliability, security, and operational excellence, and work closely with partners to establish infrastructure patterns and practices that enable both speed and safety.
- Systems thinking: You understand how infrastructure, security, compliance, and organizational systems interact, and design infrastructure architectures for long-term simplicity and resilience.
- Bias for action with rigor: You move quickly while maintaining strong standards for infrastructure quality, security hardening, and operational procedures.
- Collaborative leadership: You communicate clearly, listen well, and create an environment where infrastructure engineers and platform operators can do their best work.
