Job Duties
• Assist in interpreting engineering drawings, pavement design specifications, and construction standards, ensuring crews adhere to tolerances for grade, slope, and compaction.
• Utilize CAD or drafting tools to update site plans, as-built drawings, and change documentation based on field measurements and revisions.
• Support the preparation of quantity take-offs, material usage forecasts, project schedules, and technical documentation for asphalt and roadworks projects.
• Conduct site condition assessments to identify drainage issues, subgrade failures, and surface distress patterns such as rutting, cracking, or raveling.
• Perform field surveys using levels, and laser instruments to establish project control points, verify grades, cross-sections, and pavement alignment.
• Conduct geotechnical and materials assessments, including sampling and testing of asphalt, aggregates, and subgrade soils for density, moisture, compaction, and gradation.
• Monitor asphalt production temperatures, mix uniformity, and delivery timelines to ensure compliance with project specifications and Ministry/municipal standards.
• Observe and document roadway construction activities, including proof-rolling, base preparation, asphalt placement, joint construction, lift thickness, and rolling patterns.
• Prepare detailed technical reports summarizing test results, inspection findings, deviations from specifications, and recommended corrective actions.
• Liaise with suppliers, testing labs, and municipal inspectors to coordinate materials testing, compliance checks, and project documentation submissions.
• Apply occupational health and environmental requirements by monitoring dust control, runoff management, and safe handling of asphalt materials and equipment.
Job Requirements
• Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, or a related civil-construction field.
• Training or coursework in surveying, materials testing, construction methods, or roadworks considered an asset.
• 1 2 years of related experience in civil construction, asphalt paving support, materials testing, or field inspection preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, grades, cross-sections, and municipal specifications.
• Familiarity with field measurement tools, asphalt paving processes, compaction principles, and road construction materials.
• Ability to prepare clear technical notes, field reports, measurement logs, and simple sketches or CAD mark-ups.
• Proficiency with computer software such as Excel and Word; familiarity with CAD tools is an asset.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work outdoors on active construction sites.
• Effective communication skills for conveying technical information to supervisors, crews, and external testing services.
