Job Description:
We are looking for a Machinist Technician to join our growing team and support our fast-paced, high-volume, made-to-order Sprocket Manufacturer in beautiful South Slocan, BC. Key Responsibilities:
Machining & Fabrication
- Independently set up, program, and operate CNC and manual machinery, including lathes, mills, hydraulic press, drills, saws, and grinders.
- Develop, modify, and optimize CNC programs to improve cycle times, material utilization, and part quality.
- Interpret complex engineered drawings, production orders, and job requirements.
- Plan machining sequences and select appropriate tooling, speeds, feeds, and work holding methods.
- Perform advanced machining operations requiring tight tolerances.
- Mentor Junior Machinists in setup techniques, troubleshooting, and best practices.
Quality & Manufacturing Control
- Conduct advanced inspections of machined parts, verifying tolerances and specifications.
- Approve first-off parts prior to production runs.
- Identify and resolve root causes of defects and non-conformance.
- Ensure compliance with revision-controlled drawings and customer specifications.
- Support quality investigations and collaborate with Quality and Production teams.
Production & Process Optimization
- Review new jobs for manufacturability and identify risks prior to machining.
- Optimize setup strategies, machining sequences, and workflow efficiency.
- Reduce setup time, cycle time, and material waste.
- Coordinate with upstream and downstream processes to support production flow.
- Support implementation of process improvements and lean initiatives.
Shop Maintenance, Safety & Material Handling
- Lead by example in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Troubleshoot complex equipment issues and coordinate repairs as required.
- Oversee safe setup and handling of large or heavy components, including rigging and lifting practices.
- Identify hazards related to equipment, setups, and material handling, and take corrective action.
- Support safe and efficient staging of materials to maintain workflow.
Required Knowledge & Experience:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; formal machining certification or apprenticeship preferred.
- Experience: 4+ years of CNC and manual machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in CNC programming, setup, and troubleshooting.
- Drawing Interpretation: Strong ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Continuous Improvement Mindset: Demonstrated initiative in process improvement and skill development.
