The City of Abbotsford is looking for creative and caring individuals with a keen interest in recreation, the outdoors, and a passion for working with children. This is a seasonal position for the duration of our Summer Camps, up to 40 Hours a week dependent on program registration. The term of the position is 10 weeks, beginning June 23, 2026 and ending Aug 29, 2026.
The purpose of this position is to support summer camp children with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities with participating in a variety of activities during their enrollment in our summer day camps. In the role, the Summer Camp Support Leader works with the Summer Camp Programmer & Summer Camp Supervisor to create a supportive and inclusive camp experience. The Summer Camp Support Leader works one-on-one with a child who requires additional support during their days in camps.
Duties:
- Facilitate relationships between the child and other children, camp leaders, and supervisors that encourage others to include the child in the daily activities
- Assist the child in any tasks required to enable them to be included
- Identify strategies, modifications and/or providing a safe alternative activity during camp
- Communicate any issues or concerns to the Camp Programmer to assess what kinds of support/additional tools may be needed to create the best experience for the child in camp
- Building strong and respectful relationships with the child, their family and other leaders
- Report safety hazards and respond to first aid incidents
Qualifications:- Standard First Aid and CPR C with AED certification
- BCRPA High5 Certification
- Preferred Education Assistant Certificate or Diploma
- Previous day camp or recreation experience an asset
- Preference will be given to current post-secondary students
The applicant/incumbent will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Screening in order to work in this position and must report to their manager if any criminal charges are laid against them that may be related to their employment.
