Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour + 4% in lieu of vacation
Two (2) positions available
The City of Vernon is in search of a skilled and energetic individuals to be a FireSmart Crew Member. The FireSmart team supports wildfire preparedness, prevention, and mitigation through public education, assessments, and mitigative work to reduce community risk from wildfires.
Reporting to the FireSmart Coordinator, the FireSmart Crew Member is responsible for supporting the implementation of the FireSmart program within the City of Vernon by working to assist community members in taking steps to FireSmart their homes and supporting public education.
Duties May Include:
- Gear maintenance, including daily inspections, cleaning, and general maintenance.
- Vegetation management, including light pruning, brushing, and chipping.
- Attending community events such as Community Wildfire Preparedness Days, farmer’s markets, local sporting events, school presentations, tradeshows, and more to engage with the public and distribute FireSmart information.
- Assisting with fuel mitigation around properties.
- Able to work in all-weather types, including heat, cold, and rain, as well as various terrain types.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to obtain FireSmart 101
- Qualification as a Local FireSmart Representative or ability to obtain during employment.
- Knowledge of safe work policies related to equipment, tools and work procedures.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
- Able to work effectively and cooperatively within a diverse team to achieve group and organizational goals.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and honestly.
- Physical ability to perform manual outdoor work.
- Able to successfully complete training and certification as required.
- Able to work flexible schedule, including some weekends to accommodate community events.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in the use of ladders, and hand tools.
- Enrolment in secondary education with a focus on communication, public service, forestry, environment, firefighting, emergency management, community planning, community development, conservation, horticulture or arborist.
Notes to Applicants:
This is an excluded position with the City of Vernon, that can be scheduled up to 35 hours per week from April 29 –August 30, 2023, approximately. Schedule and hours may be changed by the FireSmart Coordinator to accommodate community events that occur during evenings and weekends.
