
Inspector - Trades II (Building)
(Contract Term Temporary, Full-Time - Approximately 25 months)

The West Vancouver Planning, Development, and Environmental Services Division has an immediate opening for a contract term temporary, full-time Inspector-Trades II (Building). This is regulatory, inspection, and enforcement work of a technical nature involving the inspection of all types of building construction or alterations. This position will also issue permits and examine plans to ensure compliance with applicable safety codes, standards, Acts, and Bylaws.
Reporting to the Supervisor of Inspections, this position will be required to:
- Inspect proposed building sites to ensure that all essential requirements such as property lines, yards, entrances, and heights conform with the Zoning Bylaws;
- Inspect all types of structures and buildings throughout construction stages to completion, ensuring their conformance with the BC Building Code and Municipal bylaws;
- Inspect construction of all parts of buildings including special features such as chimneys, fireplaces, heating systems, canopies, access to exits, and exits;
- Examine building plans and specifications to confirm conformance with the BC Building Code and Municipal bylaws;
- Issue permits for building construction and alterations;
- Prepare enforcement actions and discuss rejected inspections with owners and contractors, such as non-complaint construction and illegally built structures, and offer procedural advice towards compliance;
- Communicate with builders, owners, architects, professional engineers, and municipal staff on a variety of regulatory and administrative matters;
- Prepare, maintain, and update records, codes, regulations and guidelines relating to work;
- Obtains evidence and presents it in court when violators of the Building Bylaw are prosecuted; and
- Other related duties as required.
The preferred candidate is a team player who possesses: thorough knowledge of the current BC Building Code and the Municipal Zoning and related bylaws plus knowledge of the BC Fire Code; the ability to deal effectively with architects, contractors, and the general public in interpretation of bylaws and regulations; the ability to enforce regulations with firmness, impartiality, and sound judgment; and sound knowledge of building design and approved practices and materials used in building construction.
The successful candidate has completed Grade 12, supplemented with completion of an apprenticeship in the Carpentry trade, or graduation from a post-secondary institution with a Diploma in Building Technology, plus considerable related experience or a combination of training and experience including Level II certificates from the BC Building Officials Association. Level 3 certification by the Building Officials Association of British Columbia is preferred.
A valid BC Driver’s License and a vehicle are necessary for this position; mileage reimbursement is provided within relevant District Policy. Hours of Work:
35 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)
Starting Rate of Pay:
$47.25 per hour plus 14% in lieu of benefits
After 3 months of continuous service, Contract Term Temporary employees shall be provided with a one (1) time choice between receiving the same benefit, vacation, statutory holidays, and leave provisions as permanent employees or fourteen percent (14%) of regular salary in lieu of all benefits. This position has a pay structure with five steps which increases based on hours worked.
