The District of Barriere is seeking a full-time Public Works Coordinator to join its Public Works team as it prepares to expand its Roads Department to include the winter season. Therefore, a strong background in road maintenance is preferred.
The position reports to the Public Works Manager, takes direction from the Senior Management Team, and is responsible for overseeing daily operations within the Public Works department, ensuring safe and efficient service delivery across Solid Waste, Roads, and Parks. This position provides direct supervision of employees working in Solid Waste and Public Works (Roads and Parks).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations & Planning
- Coordinate and develop annual maintenance programs
- Monitor schedules, timelines, and resource allocation
- Assist with capital planning and project oversight
- Assist with departmental budget preparation
- Conduct inspections and recommend improvements
Field Operations
- Lead road maintenance (grading, potholes, drainage, signage)
- Coordinate winter operations (plowing, sanding, salting)
- Oversee parks and facilities maintenance
- Participate in hands-on operational work
Leadership & Administration
- Supervise and support staff across Solid Waste, Roads, and Parks
- Verify timesheets and vacation requests
- Report employee issues to the Public Works Manager
- Maintain records and ensure proper reporting
- Participate in after-hours/weekend rotations
Infrastructure & Collaboration
- Oversee roads, sidewalks, and civil infrastructure
- Collaborate with Utilities and other departments
- Ensure inventory and equipment management
- Support integrated municipal service delivery
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12 plus Public Works experience (or equivalent)
- Knowledge of OH&S regulations (WHMIS, First Aid, etc.)
- Minimum 5 years supervisory experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software
- Background in roads/civil construction (municipal preferred)
- Understanding of municipal operations and infrastructure
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
- Valid Class 3 B.C. Driver’s License with Air Brakes
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Satisfactory driver’s abstract
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Willingness to use personal vehicle (reimbursed per Collective Agreement)
- Ability to follow instructions and manage priorities
- Physical ability for outdoor manual work in all weather
This is a CUPE position with a wage of $35.36 per hour (2026 rate) plus an excellent benefits package including the Municipal Pension Plan.
