Overview and Purpose of the Role
Reporting directly to the Manager, OR & PACU this role will participate in the care of patients undergoing general, regional or local anesthetic or procedural sedation under the direct supervision and/or immediate availability of the Anesthesiologist.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide Anesthesia Assistant support to all Operating and Procedure rooms and related services where anesthesia may be involved at Schroder Ambulatory Centre.
- Participates in the anesthetic care of surgical patients undergoing general, regional or local anesthesia or procedural sedation.
- Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Anesthesiologist, performs assessments, monitor and initiate interventions required to maintain anesthesia, hemodynamic stability and hemostasis.
- Perform clinical and technical duties in accordance to professional standards, Centre policies, medical directives and physician orders
- Engage in critical thinking to assess patient's health status and identify issues in a timely manner to optimize care delivery.
- Actively participate within the interdisciplinary health care team as a reflective practitioner.
- Utilize evidence-based practice as a base in the promotion of professional accountability.
- Provide safe, competent and ethical anesthesia care.
- Maintain clinical competence and knowledge base through continued education and lifelong learning.
- Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned.
Corporate Responsibilities:
- Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.
Education, Skills & Qualifications:
- Completion of an accredited Anesthesia Assistant Basic and Advanced Education program including hands on practicum in an affiliated Health Care Center.
- Bachelor Degree in Health Sciences.
- Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario or College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario.
- Previous experience in a peri-operative environment an asset.
- Current certification in ACLS.
- Experience with advanced airway management, including fiberoptic intubations and other difficult airway adjuncts
- Capable of teaching and mentoring students/new hires in the OR setting/satellite areas.
- Excellent clinical and technical abilities
- Demonstrate a high level of maturity, independence, and self-motivation
- Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to function effectively in a multi-disciplinary team setting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check
- Provide proof of Immunization and TB records
