POSITION SUMMARY
The Design Interface Manager is responsible for overseeing utility design coordination and the transition from traffic and utilities design to implementation. This role goes beyond standard design management, requiring local experience with proven hands-on expertise in coordinating complex infrastructure interfaces and ensuring seamless collaboration between technical teams, contractors, and external stakeholders.
Reports to: Technical Director
The Design Interface Manager’s key responsibilities are:
- Lead and oversee utility design coordination across multiple disciplines, ensuring compliance with local design and construction standards and regulations.
- Manage the transition from traffic and utilities design to implementation, bridging technical design with construction execution.
- Coordinate with Design Managers in both design and construction interfaces. Promote constructability review meetings during the design progress and manage field design changes for traffic and utilities disciplines.
- Act as the primary interface between design teams, permit team, contractors, utility providers, and government agencies to resolve technical challenges.
- Ensure stakeholder requirements are captured, integrated, and managed throughout the design and implementation phases.
- Coordinate with PLAA lead to manage permit applications.
- Provide technical oversight to guarantee constructability, safety, and efficiency in design solutions.
- Monitor progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies to maintain project timelines and budgets.
- Champion best practices in design coordination, documentation, and stakeholder communication.
- Assume the role and full responsibilities of the Project Co Commissioning Authority, in accordance with the requirements set out in Schedule 14.
- Plan, prepare all required documentation for, and execute the Outline Commissioning Program, ensuring full compliance with all obligations and requirements of Schedule 14.
- Lead the Requirements Management Plan and Process according to schedule -15.
- Collaborate with NEC quality team and EJV to implement and close out ITPs.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, Infrastructure Design, or related field.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in design management with a focus on utilities and traffic coordination.
- Demonstrated local experience working with municipal authorities, utility providers, and transportation agencies.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Strong technical knowledge of utility systems, traffic design, and construction methodologies.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to resolve conflicts and align diverse interests.
- Demonstrated experience in the commissioning and handover processes for Metrolinx projects.Proven track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects from design through implementation.
- Familiarity with local permitting processes and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience in multidisciplinary project environments.
- Ability to balance technical rigor with practical implementation needs.
Compensation range: CAD 170,000 - 180,000
