Salary: $41,800 - $50,000 annual

OBJECTIVE

The Child Care Assistant is a full time position working directly under the supervision of the Child Care Supervisor. The Child Care Assistant is responsible for planning and implementing all aspects of the Child Care Program in accordance with the Early Years Act. The Child Care Assistant assists in all program areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

General

when dedicated to a classroom day, works with children in a group while retaining sensitivity to each childs individual needs;

when dedicated to a classroom day, sets up and supervises playroom ensuring that all necessary toys and equipment are available in accordance with established themes and the room and toys are kept in clean condition;

keeps an ongoing inventory of toy and craft supplies;

conducts and ensures adherence to regular washroom, lunch-time and sleep routines in accordance with pre-established procedures;

when dedicated to a classroom day, set up and supervise playground activities and organizes indoor activities during periods of inclement weather;

maintains positive communication with parents through daily contact, parent-teacher interview, conducts parent nights and participates in special events such as Christmas concerts, fundraising, summer field trips, etc;

when dedicated to a classroom day, takes attendance;

ensure the childrens activity/play areas are safe and free from obvious danger;

assist the Child Care Supervisor in carrying out the policies of the Child Care Centre;

in the event that the Child Care Supervisor is absent, ensure that the Daycare Centre operates according to the schedule;

ensures that building is properly opened or locked when either first in out last out.

Administration

2.1 assist the Child Care Supervisor in planning parent meetings, staff meetings and hiring of new staff;

2.2 attends staff meetings as scheduled.

Other Duties

3.1 performs other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

Degree/Diploma in Education or Early Childhood Education.

High School Diploma or equivalent;

2 years experience of supervising infants and children in a structured environment.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation.

Knowledge of Ojibway and the First Nations culture and traditional lifestyles.

Working knowledge of the Early Years Act and Nigigoonsiminikaaning Child Care Centre policies.

Knowledge of educational games, activities and toys and ability to implement same to create a stimulating environment for children at the Child Care Centre;

Good communication skills.

Good interpersonal relationship skills.

Ability to take direction and follow through.

Ability to work well with infants and children.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.

Fluency in the Ojibway language is an asset.

TERMS and CONDITIONS

Must possess a positive genuine interest in young children;

Possess a First Aid/CPR Certificate.

Must successfully pass a medical examination every two years;

Must have a valid Drivers License and vehicle access or reliable means to transportation to and from work location.

Must provide a criminal reference check that is satisfactory to the First Nation.

Must successfully pass a drug test.
