Pape Tunnel Underground Stations (PTUS), a vital segment of the Ontario Line, enhances connectivity, reduces congestion, and supports sustainable growth in Toronto. Webuild, in joint venture, leads this project—constructing 3.2 km of tunnel using advanced technology and two underground stations designed for future capacity, safety, accessibility, and seamless integration with Toronto’s transit network. About the Job
We are hiring a Design Manager - Tunnels and Portals - who will be responsible for coordinating the design efforts between the Design Join Venture and the construction team for tunnel and portal development, with the main aim of achieving a compliance design by managing the review processes with stakeholders.
What You Will Be Doing?
- Oversee the architectural, structural, and civil design phases for tunnel and portal projects, ensuring adherence to safety, functionality, and durability standards.
- Manage the design lifecycle for multiple tunnel and portal projects, from concept through completion, including planning, scheduling, and resource management.
- Coordinate with internal teams (e.g., engineering, geotechnical, and construction) as well as external consultants, contractors, and regulatory authorities to achieve alignment on project goals and design specifications.
- Ensure that all designs comply with local and international safety standards, including seismic, fire, and ventilation requirements.
- Conduct detailed reviews of design plans, perform site inspections, and promptly address any issues to ensure quality and consistency across all projects.
- Integrate innovative engineering and design practices into projects, focusing on enhancing safety, functionality, and sustainability in tunnel and portal designs.
- Develop and manage design budgets, ensuring that all projects are completed within allocated financial resources without compromising on quality.
- Maintain accurate records of design documents, changes, approvals, and project progress. Prepare regular status reports for senior management and other stakeholders.
What We Are Looking For?
- Extensive experience (typically 5+ years) in tunnel and underground structures design, including hands-on project management.
- Previous experience working with Design Joint Ventures (DJV) and Construction Joint Ventures (CJV) is highly desirable.
- Proven track record in coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing complex design processes in infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency in tunnel and portal design, including knowledge of various construction methodologies (e.g., cut-and-cover, bored tunnels).
- Familiarity with relevant software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or specialized tunneling software (e.g., Plaxis, GeoStudio).
- Strong understanding of geotechnical and structural analysis, with experience in risk assessment and safety standards for underground construction.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in underground projects design and construction activities/projects in Ontario
- Proficiency in design and schedule software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Primavera P6, MP)
- Strong understanding of relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE).
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities.
- Experience with project management tools and methodologies is a plus.
