About the role
We are seeking a People and Operations Leader to oversee firm operations and lead our people strategy, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and a positive workplace culture. This role combines operational leadership with human resources management. You will be responsible for optimizing workflows, managing resources, and driving people initiatives that support our strategic goals.
Key responsibilities
Human Resources (60%)
Recruitment & Talent Acquisition
- Manage end-to-end hiring for accountants, administrative staff, and interns.
- Build relationships with universities and professional associations.
Employee Relations & Engagement
- Serve as the primary HR contact for inquiries and conflict resolution.
- Develop initiatives to enhance engagement and retention.
Performance Management
- Monitor individual performance metrics, such as productivity, utilization, client satisfaction, etc.
- Coordinate annual performance reviews and goal-setting processes.
- Assist and support others in coaching, performance management, and career development.
Compliance & Policy Management
- Ensure compliance with Ontario employment laws and CPA Ontario regulations.
- Maintain HR policies and workplace safety programs.
Training & Development
- Organize professional development programs and CPA continuing education.
- Identify skill gaps and recommend training solutions.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
- Assist with overseeing payroll processing and benefits enrollment in collaboration with finance.
Operations Management (40%)
Operational Leadership
- Plan, organize, and evaluate day-to-day firm operations.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for workflow and quality control.
Financial & Resource Management
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and monitoring KPIs.
Technology & Process Improvement
- Assist in maintaining and optimizing firm software (CaseWare, Taxprep, Microsoft Office Suite).
- Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Assist other firm leaders to ensure adherence to CPA Ontario regulations and privacy laws.
- Support audit inquiries and maintain compliance documentation.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in operations and/or HR, ideally in a professional services environment.
- Related designations, such as CHRP and CHRL, would be preferred.
- Strong understanding of accounting workflows and HR and operations best practices.
- Proven experience in performance management, KPI tracking, and coaching.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with CaseWare and HRIS systems is an asset.
