ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY
The Safety & Compliance Manager is responsible for leading safety, regulatory compliance, and driver evaluation activities across the organization. This role plays a key part in promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with provincial and federal transportation regulations, and supporting drivers through coaching, training, and performance management. The position involves both office-based and field work and works closely with ownership and general management to support safe, compliant, and efficient trucking operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recruit and evaluate long-haul truck drivers in alignment with company needs and safety standards
- Review driver abstracts, experience, qualifications, and references
- Conduct and evaluate road tests, assessing driving skills, habits, and professionalism
- Ensure compliance with the Highway Traffic Act, provincial and federal transportation regulations, and Canadian Electronic Logging Device (ELD) requirements
- Monitor, audit, and analyze electronic logbooks, including hours of service, rest periods, and violations
- Identify non-compliance issues and recommend or implement corrective actions
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date driver safety and compliance files
- Communicate with drivers regarding unsafe or negative driving behaviours, violations, complaints, or incidents
- Apply progressive discipline in a professional, fair, and respectful manner when required
- Provide coaching, guidance, and support to drivers to reinforce safe driving practices
- Participate in new driver onboarding and orientation
- Recommend, coordinate, and support safety training initiatives
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, and documentation
- Support the continuous improvement of the organization’s overall safety culture
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset
- Experience within the trucking or transportation industry, ideally in a safety, compliance, supervisory, or driving capacity
- Strong working knowledge of highway traffic regulations, Canadian Hours of Service, and ELD requirements
- Ability to conduct road tests; valid Class 1 driver’s licence with air brake endorsement
- Strong communication, coaching, and conflict management skills
- Ability to enforce policies and regulations in a professional and respectful manner
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently
