About the role:
The Orchard Tractor Operator supports the growing and harvest season in a plum orchard, which runs from April through October, with peak operational demands in June, July, and August.
Hours of work will vary by week and month, depending on farming needs and weather conditions.
This is a part-time seasonal position which involves operating and maintaining tractors and specialized orchard equipment to support day-to-day orchard operations. The operator must be skilled in working within tight orchard rows using narrow-frame tractors and a variety of implements, including mowers, sprayers, harvest equipment, and hauling attachments.
This role is ideal for individuals who love farming and understand the seasonality of this work.
Responsibilities:
Key Areas of Responsibilities
- Operation: Maneuver tractors (often specialized narrow models) for planting, spraying, mowing, fertilizing, and harvesting.
- Maintenance: Perform daily checks (fluids, cleaning) and minor repairs on equipment.
- Implement Use: Attach and operate various tools like sprayers, mowers, and harvesters.
- Precision: Work with high accuracy.
- Material Handling: Load, unload, and transport materials like soil, sand, gravel, and debris. Operators must be skilled at maneuvering loads safely and efficiently.
- Maintenance: Perform routine daily maintenance and minor repairs on equipment like (grease equipment every day, clean cab and workplace daily). This helps prevent breakdowns and extends the life of the machinery.
- Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment. This includes wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to safety guidelines specific to each job site. Follow strict safety protocols, especially when working near trees or with other machinery.
- Communication: Coordinate with others to ensure tasks are completed as planned. Effective communication is crucial for safe and efficient operation.
- Problem-Solving: Address and troubleshoot issues that arise with the machinery or the work site. This may involve adjusting equipment settings or altering work methods.
- General Farm maintenance and grounds keeping. In between the growing and harvest season, the operators will be required to perform general farm maintenance including grounds keeping utilizing grass trimer and small riding mower to keep farm nice and clean.

What you bring Skills and Qualifications:
- Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of how to operate and maintain various types of heavy machinery as well as general lawn equipment.
- Experience: Previous experience operating farm tractors or heavy equipment is usually required.
- Spatial Awareness: Ability to judge distances and operate machinery precisely.
- Physical Fitness: The role often requires physical strength and stamina, as well as the ability to handle the physical demands of the job. Ability to stand, walk, and work in various conditions.
- Attention to Detail: Precision in operating machinery and following safety protocols is essential.
- Mechanical Aptitude: For basic troubleshooting and upkeep.
- License: A valid driver's license is essential; pesticide applicator licenses are assets (or we can set up training for pesticide license)
- Adaptability: Willingness to learn new technologies, able to fill up daily reports
