DEFINITION:
Under the general direction of the Fire Chief or designate, the Firefighter is responsible for performing firefighting, rescue, medical response, and related emergency services as part of an integrated fire‑rescue team. The Firefighter participates in the daily operation, readiness, and maintenance of fire department apparatus, equipment, and facilities to ensure effective emergency response capability.
The position functions as a member of IAFF Local 2685 and provides skilled, professional service in accordance with departmental policies, operational guidelines, training standards, and applicable legislation. The Firefighter performs hands‑on emergency response and station duties, maintains operational proficiency, and ensures adherence to all safety, regulatory, and collective agreement requirements while working collaboratively with other firefighters, officers, and allied agencies.
DUTIES:
- Perform fire suppression;
- Perform rescue/hazardous material response;
- Auto extrication;
- Provide emergency medical care;
- Assist with public fire education and fire prevention programs;
- Undertake fire inspection activities;
- Perform other duties as assigned by shift or chief officer
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Legally entitled to work in Canada;
- High School graduation or equivalent (certificate required);
- Completion of NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 & 2 (IFSAC OR PRO-BOARD accredited) standard;
- Valid BC Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board EMR or PCP License or capable of attaining;
- Ability to work comfortably around and in water;
- Minimum two years of accumulated work experience following completion of high school;
- Valid B.C. Driver's License, Class 5 with air brakes endorsement;
- Demonstrated commitment to a fit and healthy lifestyle;
- Commitment to personal development;
- The ability to deal effectively and courteously with co-workers and the public;
- The following qualifications are considered assets:
- Career or Volunteer firefighting experience;
- Any Pro-board of IFSAC accredited courses.
- Valid BC Class 3 licence.
The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment screening including criminal record check, driver's abstract, medical clearance, and skills/fitness testing consistent with departmental standards.
