Rural Roads Health Services (RRHS) is actively seeking applicants for a Clinical Externs.
The primary location for this position is: Alexandra Hospital Ingersoll or Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital
The duration of this temporary contract would be approximately May 7, 2026, to September 1, 2026, or sooner, as determined by RRHS.
Position Summary:
Clinical Externs are unregulated healthcare providers that work under the direct and/or indirect supervision of regulated healthcare professionals, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to provide quality and safe patient care. This position provides the opportunity for students enrolled in an eligible academic program to gain experience in a clinical environment.
Reporting to the Professional Practice Program, the Clinical Extern position is a temporary contract, during which time the Clinical Extern can work part-time and full-time hours. The scheduling of hours is determined based on operational needs and may include day/evening/night/weekend shifts.
Eligibility:
The following students registered in an accredited academic program are eligible to apply:
- Nursing students in their 2nd, 3rd or final year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN/BN) and/or Practical Nursing (PN) program
- Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) who have initiated CNO registration, received a CNO letter of direction and are:
- Enrolled in any year of a CNO approved program (BScN-IEN, PN-IEN), or
- Completing a micro-credential plan/curriculum to meet the CNO registration requirements (i.e. Standards of Practice for Nursing, Entry-to-Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency), or
- Completed education requirements (i.e. BScN-IEN, PN-IEN or micro-credentialing) and are awaiting their registration exam
- Paramedic students in their 2nd year of an approved Paramedic Program
- Physiotherapy students in any year of a program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC)
Key Responsibilities
- Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of registered healthcare professionals, including leadership oversight, in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards
- Works with registered healthcare professionals to ensure they have the knowledge, skill and judgement required to perform all actions and/or duties within scope of practice and/or as assigned
- Demonstrates the ability to reflect on own practice and identify learning needs
- Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever needed or required
- Observes and assists with patient assessment, activities of daily living, basic care needs, mobility, lifts and/or transfers
- Perform clinical tasks within scope of practice or as assigned under direct and/or indirect supervision
- Assists with the observation of patients and reports changes to registered healthcare professionals in a timely manner
- Assists with portering and directing patients
- Assists with patient recreation activities, including yet not limited to, reading, socializing, puzzles, games, assisting with technology, family communication, etc.
- Assists with patient rounding and responding to call bells and/or patient needs
- Assists with comfort rounding, comfort measures and patient safety
- Ensures the environment is clean, tidy and free of hazards
- Documents all care provided as per professional standards and organizational policies
- Assists with obtaining and stocking supplies
- Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrates empathy and professional/therapeutic communication skills
- Demonstrates strong written communication and documentation skills
- Actively seeks opportunities for professional develops and participates as an active team member
Qualifications Required
- Minimum one (1) year of previous employment in any setting with suitable references
- Current BCLS required
- Crisis Intervention Training and Certification preferred
- Gentle Persuasive Approach Certification preferred
- Strong computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office, Outlook and Internet
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and customer service orientation
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
- Demonstrated ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality
- Demonstrated initiative and self-direction with the ability to work with supervision and take direction when necessary
- Demonstrated commitment to own professional development and continuing education
- Collaborates with other team members
- Knowledgeable of the roles of other team members and recognizes and respects their contributions

Other pertinent conditions:
- Wage: $24.19 (This is inclusive of in lieu of benefits and statutory holiday pay and vacation)
