Full Summer Position - approximately 17 to 20 weeks (depending on student start date). End of April until end of August, 2026.
Ontario Crops Research Centre (OCRC) - New Liskeard is seeking a Summer Student Agronomy Assistant to assist in establishing and maintaining crop management and crop variety evaluation studies. Projects include corn, cereals, soybean and canola performance and variety characterization, pest management, and fertility response studies. Skills in plant and pest identification, scouting and monitoring techniques, measurements of agronomic performance and data collection will be enhanced.
Specific activities will include: assisting with land preparation and seeding operations, seed preparation, maintenance of studies (including clipping and weeding plots by hand, clearing the field of stones or other debris, as well as maintenance fertilizer application and pest control operations), harvesting operations, quantitative data collection such as crop/pest density, pest distribution, pest duration, plant height, crop yields and quality analyses, soil and plant tissue sampling, crop dry matter determination, seed cleaning, germination tests and sample preparation (such as grinding). Students will be trained on these operations, so no prior experience is required.
We are looking for candidates with:
· have a background in, strong interest in or be studying in agricultural, environmental or other biological sciences
· have the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 25kg
· be able to work well independently and in a team environment
· have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
· be able to follow directions and procedures precisely
· have sound judgment and critical thinking skills
· have the ability to perform repetitive tasks efficiently with high accuracy
· have computer skills (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, Internet navigation)
· be a post-secondary student (college or university who was or will be enrolled in the Winter 2026 or Fall 2026 school semesters
Steel-toed safety boots are required at the workplace.
Much of the work activity takes place outdoors. The student will be exposed to sunlight, heat, humidity, dust and pollen. The student may be required to work longer hours during busy times of the season. This is a physically demanding role.
