Job Description
The Systems Safety Associate Specialist will be responsible for contributing to safety analyses during the design and development of vehicle systems. As an entry-level position, you will be guided and mentored by technical subject matter experts. This role focuses on ensuring vehicle crew safety, equipment damage and reducing environmental impacts while collaborating with cross-functional teams. You will be involved throughout the design process, from initial concept development to final design reviews, and will present recommendations for improvement. This role offers a great opportunity for recent graduates to develop their skills and work towards advanced qualifications in the field of safety engineering.
Key Job Elements
- Collaborate with design teams to identify and mitigate potential safety risks during vehicle design
- Perform safety analyses using techniques such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA)
- Assist in ensuring designs align with safety standards and regulations
- Support the creation and management of hazard logs and risk registers
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design and systems engineering, to address safety concerns
- Participate in Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health (ESOH) testing and reporting as required
- Contribute to the development of safety-related documentation and reports for internal and external stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- University Degree in a relevant Engineering field or related discipline
- Strong interest in Systems Engineering focusing on safety principles and a willingness to learn.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Strong communication, organization, and prioritization skills
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Willingness to travel occasionally (5% domestic, 5% international) and maintain a valid passport
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in safety analysis tools and techniques, failure analysis, hazard identification and risk assessment
- Specialization in safety engineering and risk management
- Familiarity with Systems Engineering and requirements management
- Knowledge of safety standards and regulations (e.g, MIL-STD-882)
- Understanding of Functional Safety and ISO 26262
- Interest in pursuing professional certifications in Functional Safety (i.e. TUV SUD)
- Experience working with CAMEO, IBM Doors and JIRA

The Systems Safety Associate Specialist/Engineer opening is a current vacant position at General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada. The base salary hiring range for this position is $61,600 to $77,000 per year. Once in the role, successful candidates will have the opportunity to progress through the full salary range based on performance. This range reflects the base salary only and does not include additional components of our total compensation package, such as our incentive award program and other rewards like health benefits, employee profit-sharing, retirement savings, and more.
