Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS) was established in 1972 and is a non-profit organization with a status free open-door policy. KAFS is dedicated to empowering the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities of Kamloops and surrounding areas. KAFS provides culturally appropriate programs and inclusive services that meet the needs of urban Indigenous people to become healthier, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Reporting to the Family Violence Prevention Manager, the Family Violence Prevention Caseworker is responsible for providing direct support, advocacy, and case management to individuals and families impacted by family violence. This role aims to support clients in achieving safety, stability, and well-being through culturally sensitive, trauma-informed approaches. This is a relational, community-based role that requires a foundational understanding of cultural practices, the ability to bring a cultural perspective into day-to-day work, and a willingness to learn through mentorship.
The Caseworker will work collaboratively with community resources and the Family Violence Prevention team to develop and implement individualized safety plans and strategies for violence prevention and recovery. A key component of this role is supporting men and boys who have used violence, including individual case management and facilitation of structured group programming.
A DAY IN THE LIFE – ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide intake, assessment, and direct support to individuals and families impacted by family violence, including risk and safety assessments and the development and monitoring of individualized care/safety plans.
- Provide advocacy and systems navigation, connecting clients to relevant services (legal, medical, housing, employment, emergency shelters, counselling, benefits, financial supports) and coordinating referrals through community partners.
- Deliver workshops, outreach, and presentations that promote prevention, healthy relationships, and community awareness using culturally appropriate and trauma-informed approaches.
- Provide direct support and case management for clients who have used violence, including men and boys, with a focus on accountability and behaviour change.
- Facilitate structured group programming for participants who have used violence, including programming intake/suitability assessment, maintaining participant and facilitator safety, supporting related legal or court processes as needed, and coordinating with collateral contacts and professional supports to support safety planning and continuity of goals.
- Participate in team meetings and case reviews, and work with community leaders, law enforcement, and other agencies to support coordinated violence prevention efforts, sharing relevant updates while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain accurate case files, documentation, and records in accordance with organizational and legal standards, safeguarding confidentiality.
- Prepare reports and updates related to caseload, program outcomes, and client needs, contributing to ongoing evaluation and service improvement.
- Work collaboratively with other KAFS departments in service delivery and perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS – WHAT YOU BRING TO KAFS:
- Diploma in Human Services, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in family violence prevention, social services, crisis intervention, or related field.
- Cultural knowledge and a genuine commitment to incorporating cultural practices into day-to-day work.
- Knowledge of local Indigenous communities, cultural sensitivity, and understanding of how family violence impacts Indigenous populations.
- Strong understanding of the dynamics of family violence, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention techniques.
- Experience supporting clients who have used violence, including completing intakes/assessments and determining suitability for programming.
- Experience facilitating group programming, including maintaining participant safety and managing group dynamics.

- Skilled in conflict mediation and resolution, with diplomacy, tact, and discretion with sensitive information.
- Ability to use advocacy and rapport skills to foster strong connections with diverse stakeholders.
- Must be flexible, adaptable, and able to work effectively in a variety of settings.

- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
