We are seeking an experienced and skilled Network Service Engineer with expertise in customer network service configuration to join our dynamic and innovative team. As a Network Service Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and optimizing services on the Lightspeed LEO network infrastructure. Your deep understanding of network architecture, protocols, and best practices will contribute to the scalability, reliability, and performance of our network services while ensuring alignment with business objectives.
Working directly with our Commercial and Product team, Sales Engineering and Customers as a representative of Network Engineering to consult and provide guidance on configurations via documentation, use cases and test cases that drive optimizations of implemented network service designs.
The Network Service Engineer is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Lightspeed services and configurations available within the service design and portfolio. You will also work with other Lightspeed teams within Telesat and our external contractors to ensure designs, implementation decisions, validation plans and documentation reflect the business requirements and objectives of the Lightspeed program.
Network Design and Implementation
- Understand and apply the design and implementation of layer 2 and 3 routing and switching solutions, ensuring optimal utilization of network resources and improved traffic engineering.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into effective network solution designs.
- Develop strategies for partner business units to implement and manage network services implementations of network architectures.
- As a representative of the Network Engineering team, evaluate inbound product change requests by assessing, documenting and responding with technical feasibility and impact.
Network Architecture and Optimization
- Contribute to the architectural planning and evolution of the customer network, with explicit focus on layer 2 transparent networks as a key technology.
- Identify opportunities for optimization and enhanced performance using the Lightspeed network for customer data networks.
- Perform network assessments and recommend improvements to maintain network health, operational efficiency and SLO/SLA reporting.
- Design and build proposed network architectures in Telesat’s lab environment while documenting appropriate test cases and performance metrics.
- Represent the Lightspeed Network Engineering team by documenting and delivering network requirements to hardware and software development teams specifically in the areas of customer facing MEF 3.0 interface and networking design support requirements on data processing equipment.
- In coordination with Network Engineering team attend, contribute and produce materials for internal and external design and system engineering reviews for Lightspeed Network Engineering related activities.
Protocols and Standards
- Maintain a deep understanding of industry standards and protocols such as IPv4, IPv6, IS-IS, BGP, segment routing and MPLS.
- Stay updated with emerging trends and advancements in segment routing technologies, applying them to enhance network capabilities.
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution
- Act as a subject matter expert assist with complex network troubleshooting and incident resolution.
- Collaborate with the Lightspeed Operations team to diagnose and address network behaviours and incidents in a timely manner, minimizing service disruptions.
Vendor and Solution Evaluation
- Evaluate new networking hardware, software, and solutions that align with network strategies and network growth plans.
- Collaborate with vendors to understand product roadmaps and provide feedback for feature enhancements.
Documentation and Knowledge Sharing
- Create and maintain detailed technical and training documentation, including network diagrams, configuration guidelines and troubleshooting procedures for our Product, Sales and Sales Engineering teams.
- Prepare and deliver materials including presentations, reference documentation and test strategies for Lightspeed network equipment and applications deployment and operation
- Share knowledge and mentor Telesat resources, fostering a culture of continuous learning and skill development.
- With Lightspeed Network Engineers develop and oversee plans including product idea investigations, proof of concept, service validation and product demonstrations in Telesat Lightspeed labs.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- 10+ years of experience in carrier and customer network design, operation and deployment
- Broad experience or exposure across all areas of network related product design, development, verification, deployment and support
- Understanding of Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) standards and objectives as they relate to Carrier Ethernet Services.
- Knowledge of routing and switching protocols, including IPv4, IPv6, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, and MPLS.
- In-depth experience and understanding of network test devices and reporting such as Ixia and Spirent tools
- Experience with network automation and scripting using tools such as Python, Ansible, or similar.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to guide and mentor engineers and customer-facing resources.
- In-depth understanding of security principles and practices as they relate to network architecture.
- Proven experience in network design, architecture, and optimization.
- Professional certifications from Cisco, Juniper, Ciena or equivalent, are highly desirable.
- Comfortable leading meetings and able to communicate issues and trends to senior management and other groups at the appropriate level of detail.
- Excellent communication (verbal, written, presentation) and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, with a proven track record of working effectively within cross-functional teams.
- Communicate well with own team and across organizational boundaries to ensure the successful completion of shared goals.
