The Manager, Credit Structuring in the Western Canadian Advisory Group at National Bank plays a critical role in supporting complex commercial lending activities across Western Canada. This position focuses on advising Regional Commercial Banking teams on structuring and underwriting large borrowing arrangements, including business transfers, mergers and acquisitions, and transactions in higher-risk industries. The role also ensures consistency in credit practices, facilitates communication with Risk Management, and provides strategic insights to support the overall health of the Western Canadian Commercial Loan Portfolio.
Based in Calgary, the successful incumbent will act as a collaborative and knowledgeable partner, supporting the Lead, Credit Structuring in delivering best-in-class credit structuring, underwriting, and transaction support, while proactively identifying process improvements and areas of opportunity.
Your Role:
This position offers the opportunity to play an important role in the co-creation of a new and dynamic credit advisory team from the ground up. The Western Canada Advisory Group plays an integral role in structuring the largest and most complex commercial banking transactions across Western Canada. Success in this role requires a collaborative approach and a strong ability to build relationships and seamlessly share subject matter expertise with internal partners and stakeholders. The team is focused on delivering high-quality outcomes while maintaining a culture of support, expertise, and continuous improvement.
Transaction Advisory Advise Western Canada Commercial Banking teams on the structuring and underwriting of large, complex borrowing arrangements, including business transfers, M&A transactions, and cash flow lending in higher-risk industries
Participate in initial transaction assessments and review transaction committee materials
Provide recommendations on transaction structuring and guide deal teams on underwriting and risk mitigation best practices
Validate amendments to deal documentation and review credit applications for accuracy and completeness prior to submission to Risk Management
Standardization & Best Practices Maintain and update transaction databases, including deal structures, covenant packages, and industry-specific data
Regularly review credit application templates and supporting materials to ensure consistency across Western Canada
Loan Portfolio Management Maintain an up-to-date view of the Western Canadian Commercial Loan Portfolio
Conduct trend analysis on risk rating migration and overall financial health at both industry and regional levels
Learning & Development Partner with the Lead, Western Commercial Advisory Group, to deliver targeted training to Western Canada Commercial Banking teams, including NBC-specific lending programs
Requirements: Bachelor of Commerce, Business Administration, or equivalent professional experience
Master of Business Administration (MBA) considered an asset
Minimum 7 years of experience in commercial banking, with a strong track record in underwriting
Strong technical credit expertise, including transaction structuring, underwriting, and credit risk management
Solid understanding of NBC risk appetite, or the ability to quickly develop this knowledge
Experience in cash flow lending
