Fleet Mechanic – Emergency Vehicles
Do you have hands-on experience with heavy-duty fleet maintenance, emergency vehicle systems, and advanced diagnostics? Are you a certified mechanic with strong welding, fabrication, and compliance knowledge? If so, we want you on our Fleet Services Team!
The Fleet Mechanic - Emergency Vehicles is responsible to perform skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on a variety of Regional District vehicles and equipment, with a particular focus on Emergency Vehicle Fleet. Specific duties include performance of preventative maintenance checks, ordering of required parts and file maintenance on the vehicle fleet.
You will:- Prioritize, diagnose, repair, replace and adjust to follow Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), Transport Canada and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommendations as needed on all Fire and Rescue vehicles in the RDCO fleet (approx. 40 units in 5 rural fire halls, 2 city fire halls, and 1 boat house) to minimize downtime. This includes all equipment and electronic systems attached thereto (e.g. jaw systems, chain saws, power generation equipment, portable pumps). Supply and maintain own mechanic handtools.
- Diagnose, repair, replace and adjust all non-emergency fleet vehicles, as needed, and a variety of other Regional District equipment, including preventative maintenance inspections.
- Maintain the RDCO Fleet Preventative Maintenance Program. Inspect and certify fleet under provincial legislation (CVSE).
- Document all inspections and repairs performed and keep a file on each vehicle in the fleet.
- Perform all work in accordance with current legislation, established safety procedures, and manufacturer’s specifications, including lock-out and tag-out requirements where applicable.
- Coordinate with external service providers and dealerships for specialized repairs, including transporting vehicles or equipment and acting as a technical liaison to support timely completion of work.
- Fabricate custom equipment and accessories for the Regional District. Perform welding repair and fabrication tasks as required.
- Work with internal departments to assist in the development and review of specifications for new vehicle and equipment acquisitions. Provide instruction to staff on the safe use of new equipment.
- Maintain and repair generators at fire halls, including scheduling regular inspections in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Acts as relief for fleet mechanic during periods of absence, holidays and emergency situations..
- Provide training, guidance and technical oversight to apprentices or junior staff when assigned.
- Other related duties as required.
To be successful in this role, you must have completed a BC Journeyman Certification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or Truck and Transport Mechanic (or equivalent) and possess a minimum of three years of varied experience in mechanical repair and fleet maintenance programs. You must hold a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement as well as have Basic First Aid Certification and a Transportation Endorsement. This position requires strong knowledge of maintenance techniques, tools, equipment, and safety practices related to cars, trucks, heavy mobile equipment, small engines, and emergency vehicles, as well as familiarity with marine equipment repair, welding techniques, and zero-emission vehicle systems. You must be proficient using Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Microsoft Office, and maintaining accurate service records. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
This is a permanent, fulltime, CUPE 338 position that works a Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm schedule with potential evening and weekend work required to meet operational demands. This position pays $50.93 per hour.
