Reporting to the Manager, Fleet Engineering, this role is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of transit fleet operations. This position applies engineering principles and data analysis to maintain vehicle specifications, coordinate maintenance programs, and implement engineering-driven improvements across revenue and non-revenue vehicles. The incumbent will:
- Maintain and apply engineering standards and vehicle specifications to support reliable and consistent fleet performance
- Lead the specification framework and process for new vehicles (revenue and non-revenue), ensuring specification updates remain defensible, traceable, and consistently applied
- Provide technical recommendations to strengthen specifications based on sound engineering principles, data and documented sources, identifying impacts to safety, maintainability and cost
- Support procurement processes by providing technical inputs for specifications and documenting technical rationale for exceptions and variances
- Monitor key performance indicators and trends related to the lifecycle and failures of vehicle components to identify emerging risks, recurring issues, and opportunities for performance improvement across the fleet
- Conduct technical investigations and root-cause analysis on recurring defects, repeat failures, and reliability risks
- Recommend component/sub-component for retrofit and/or replacement based on sound engineering principles, data, and documented sources
- Develop and support bus reliability programs to improve fleet reliability and monitors contractor performance and compliance
- Coordinate technical requirements for engineering-driven maintenance programs, campaigns, retrofit initiatives, and compliance activities to support reliable fleet operations
- Support fleet investment planning and lifecycle decisions that balance service requirements, risk, and long-term fleet sustainability
- Support system installations and fleet program evaluation activities, providing technical guidance, client support and effective communication to internal partners
The successful applicant will possess:
- University/College degree in Engineering or Diploma in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Engineering Management, a 310T, or
an equivalent combination of education and experience- Minimum five (5) years' experience in heavy duty on-highway vehicle management, heavy-duty on-highway maintenance, vehicle engineering, including experience extracting, analyzing, reporting technical data and creating and maintaining data files
- Demonstrated experience in project management and implementation of large-scale capital programs
- Knowledge of fleet engineering technology principles applied to transit vehicles, methods for reliability and lifecycle analysis, vehicle specification development and technical standards management
- Knowledge of practices for implementing fleet campaigns and technical initiatives, onboard integration concepts for third-party systems and basic contract and procurement practices
- Ability to translate technical material to nontechnical partner groups as well as ability to apply engineering principles and technical judgement to develop data-driven recommendations
- Exceptional analytical thinking, problem-solving and project management skills coupled with demonstrated communication, collaboration and time management skills and attention to detail
- Creativity in developing equitable, accessible, and sustainable solutions
- P. Eng or CET certification is strongly desirable, and Project Management Professional (PMP) is an asset
