POSITION OVERVIEW:
This is public education, promotional and community relations work will involve facilitating, coordinating, planning andorganizing FireSmart related activities to promote fire safety awareness within the City of Maple Ridge. The FireSmart coordinator will provide recommendations to homeowners; conduct research and site visits with a Firefighter and community outreach and facilitate FireSmart 101 sessions throughout the City; and prepare related correspondence and reports. The FireSmart Coordinator will attend tradeshows, wildfire preparedness days and community public events; promote fire and life safety in the community and participate in the development of tabletop exercises. The work will be performed under general supervision and require public contact and the exercise of tact, discretion and sound judgement.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a post-secondary diploma in Forestry or related field and some related FireSmart and/or wildfire management behaviour experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Sound knowledge of fire prevention, FireSmart and emergency preparedness.
- Sound knowledge of fire and public safety education and emergency management. Sound knowledge of the City's geographic areas.
- Sound knowledge of other applicable municipal bylaws and regulations. Ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate with internal departments, strata's, property management companies, elected officials, community representatives and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively deliver and present educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences. Ability to write correspondence, research and prepare reports and public education materials.
- Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with the public and to exercise sound judgement and discretion.
- Ability to establish, develop and maintain effective working relations with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Ability to work and travel in rural and remote areas.
- Skill in the use of office equipment and software required for work, including presentation development tools, education programs and social media applications

This is a one (1) year Temporary Full Time position.
