Nature and Scope of Work:
This is police vehicle driving, manual and clerical work in ensuring police vehicles undergo regular maintenance and repair as necessary. An employee of this class schedules and delivers vehicles to and from repair shops, performs minor vehicle maintenance and servicing duties, orders and stocks an inventory of supplies, prepares and maintains records related to the work and provides assistance as required. The work is performed in accordance with defined work methods and procedures, with the incumbent exercising independence of judgment and action in carrying out assigned duties. Performance is evaluated by a supervisor for adherence to established procedures and safe operation of vehicles.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Schedules and delivers police vehicles to repair shops for planned and unplanned service, maintenance and repair work; conducts visual checks upon pick up to confirm receipt of services; picks up and delivers a variety of equipment and supplies; and transports police members as required.
- Performs minor vehicle maintenance and servicing duties such as changing flat tires, replacing bulbs; cleans the interior and exterior of vehicles; and maintains general cleanliness of the work area.
- Takes inventory of equipment in police vehicles, reporting any unaccounted for to a supervisor; ensures equipment is fully charged and functional and replaces it if necessary; ensures equipment is properly stored; tracks missing equipment and sends out related notifications; recalls equipment for servicing as required; and arranges for transfer of equipment from retired to new vehicles.
- Maintains and stocks an inventory of police vehicle supplies such as road safety equipment, fire extinguishers, police tape and first aid kits; and orders same to replenish supplies.
- Receives and records issues and complaints related to vehicles or equipment and provides related assistance as required.
- Prepares correspondence and coordinates the processing of motor vehicle claims, insurance and licensing for Department vehicles and the return of lease vehicles.
- Maintains computerized records of vehicles, maintenance schedules, expenditures and routine records related to the operation and provides related information as required.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a variety of external contacts to coordinate the processing of maintenance, service and repair requests.
- Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills- Sound knowledge of traffic rules and regulation governing the safe operation of passenger automobiles and emergency vehicles.
- Sound knowledge of automotive equipment related to the work performed.
- Sound knowledge of departmental functions, rules and safe work practices governing the work.
- Working knowledge of the geography and street locations of the City of Delta.
- Ability to safely operate automotive vehicles.
- Ability to perform minor vehicle maintenance and servicing tasks.
- Ability to operate the software, computer and office equipment utilized in the work.
- Ability to maintain inventories and records and perform a variety of clerical and recordkeeping tasks.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various internal and external contacts including members and established vendors.
- Ability to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.
- Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work.
Desirable Training and Experience
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by related training and sound related experience in minor vehicle maintenance or as an attendant in a garage, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Licences, Certificates and Registrations
Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
