
Utility Operator
Location: 4953 Spurraway Road, Kamloops, BC
Reporting To: Operations Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Rotational shift work and on-call/standby coverage required
About the Position
Rayleigh Waterworks District is seeking a qualified and motivated Utility Operator to join our operations team.
The Utility Operator plays an important role in the safe, reliable and efficient operation and maintenance of the District’s water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment and collection systems.
Reporting to the Operations Manager or designate, the successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining utility infrastructure, conducting water quality testing, completing operational records, responding to system issues and emergencies, and ensuring that operations meet applicable regulatory, permit and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor water treatment and distribution systems, including SCADA, gauges, meters and control equipment.
- Monitor and adjust treatment processes, chemical feed rates, flows and residuals as required.
- Conduct daily laboratory testing and water quality sampling.
- Perform inspections, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on plant and utility equipment.
- Perform field work involving water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Identify leaks and system deficiencies and operate valves, hydrants and other distribution equipment.
- Inspect new construction and assist with maintaining system maps, as-built drawings and operational records.
- Maintain accurate operational, maintenance, laboratory and regulatory records.
- Maintain facility cleanliness, security and safe working conditions.
- Assist with system repairs and coordinate with contractors as required.
- Participate in emergency response and on-call/standby duties.
- Assist with training and supporting other utility staff.
- Communicate operational and mechanical issues effectively with the Operations Manager and administrative personnel.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
The successful candidate will have:
- Level III EOCP Water Treatment Certificate.
- Level II EOCP Water Distribution Certificate and/or a post-secondary diploma in Water Quality Technology or equivalent.
- Minimum three years of experience working in a public or private utility environment.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Current First Aid training.
- Confined Space Entry training.
- Knowledge of water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment and collection systems.
- Knowledge of water quality sampling procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of British Columbia regulations, operating permits and utility policies.
- Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond calmly and effectively during emergencies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance duties and safely operate common tools, equipment and vehicles.

Hours of Work
This position requires:
- Rotational shift work, including non-normal working hours.
- Participation in an on-call/standby rotation.
- The ability to respond to operational issues and emergencies when required.
Wage
- CUPE agreement
- Hourly $35.03-40.46 DOE
