Reporting to the Assistant Administrator, the incumbent will manage and provide effective leadership and accountability to the Recreation & Therapy Services Department at Home.
The incumbent will:
- Lead the design and delivery for four functional areas including Recreation and Social Activities, Religious and Spiritual Practices, Restorative Care and Volunteer Services
- Manage and lead the design, delivery and evaluation of recreation, therapy, volunteer and pastoral care programs and services that meet the needs, interests and abilities of the residents of the Home within the legislation and regulatory requirements of the Ministry of Long Term Care
- Ensure recreation activity and therapy schedules are developed, implemented and communicated to residents and families
- Attend and/or schedule staff to attend care conferences and ensure residents have clinical assessments completed in accordance with regulations and schedules
- Be responsible for the Home-wide Volunteer Management Program and researching and facilitating community partnerships
- Champion diversity, equity and inclusion by providing a wide range of programs that meet the needs of a diverse cultural population with varying cognitive and functional needs
- Research and revise recreation and rehabilitation service delivery models based on new, emerging, and evidence-based practices
- Recruit, onboard, orientate, train and schedule both staff and students, and manage performance by conducting reviews, setting work plans, auditing work, coaching, mentoring and disciplining as needed
- Directly supervise employees in both CUPE 1764 and CUPE 132 and resolve matters of conflict and grievances, participate in negotiations and on the Home¿s Labour Relations Committee
- Manage, monitor, analyze and evaluate the departmental budget for the four program areas and recommend and forecast budget needs for Senior Leadership and initiate actions to operate within fiscal plans
- Ensure compliance with Ministry of Health and Ministry of Long Term Care legislation and other relevant laws and regulations
- Supervise, evaluate and direct contracted services such as Physiotherapy and Music Therapy by performing needs-based analysis, researching and sourcing companies and services, developing Requests for Quotations and Requests for Proposals and managing contractors
- Participate in strategic and operational planning activities by establishing goals and performance standards, providing feedback on recommendations, developing and implementing plans and monitoring and evaluating goals and outcomes and reporting on progress
- Under the assignment of the Administrator, act as a project manager for large scale home wide initiatives such as, and not limited to, Accreditation, Mask Fit Testing, Resident Voting, Employee Appreciation Events
- Under the direction of the Administrator, coordinate the Accreditation process for the home with Accreditation Canada
- Participate on Divisional and home-wide committees such as but not limited to, Resident Council, Quality Committee, Palliative Care Committee, Behaviour Support Ontario Health and Safety Committee
- Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable health and safety legislation and all corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety
The successful applicant will have:
- Post-secondary education in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Therapeutic Recreation or a related discipline or combination of education and experience may be considered
- Several years leadership experience in a long term care setting
- Several years experience in program planning, project management, volunteer coordination and marketing
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Fixing Long Term Care Act, 2021 and Regulations and Accreditation Canada standards and requirements
- Knowledge of Regulated Health Professionals Act, Pubic Health Act, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Knowledge and experience in professional best practices such as Montessori-based dementia programming, Snoezelen, Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) and Java Music
- Understanding and knowledge of documentation systems including Point Click Care, RAI-MDS, ActivityPro
- Demonstrated experience with financial, accounting and budget functions
- Effective leadership skills, including team building, problem solving, and motivational abilities
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, combined with sound judgement and decision-making abilities
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Certification in volunteer management, leadership excellence, municipal management and GPA are assets
- Membership in Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) preferred
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate a respectful and bias-aware team culture.
