Position Title: Public Works Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Wage Range: $34.76 - $39.48 per hour
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week – Preferred start date – September 14, 2026
Regular hours of work will be scheduled in accordance with operational requirements. Rotating schedules, emergency call-outs, overtime, and modified work schedules may be required.
Union: Canadian Union of Public Employees (C.U.P.E.) Local 2254

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Public Works Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker is responsible for assisting in the maintenance, repair, and operation of the City's public works infrastructure, facilities, utilities, parks, and equipment. The incumbent performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled labour tasks and operates municipal equipment while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
We are seeking a dependable and safety-focused Public Works Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker to join our Public Works team. This position performs a wide range of operational, maintenance, and construction-related duties in support of municipal services. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and a commitment to providing quality service to the community.
The main areas of responsibility include:
- Perform maintenance, repair, and installation work related to water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems.
- Carry out inspections, maintenance, and repairs of sewer lift stations and wastewater treatment infrastructure.
- Respond to and resolve sanitary sewer blockages and undertake preventative maintenance activities.
- Conduct reservoir inspections, maintenance, and repair work.
- Load, unload, transport, and handle materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Perform road maintenance, park maintenance, and general public works activities.
- Maintain municipal lots, trails, sidewalks, fences, and cemetery grounds.
- Perform tree pruning, vegetation management, and tree removal activities as required.
- Complete manual labour tasks including shoveling, raking, grading, and site cleanup.
- Perform winter maintenance duties including snow plowing, snow removal, sanding, and de-icing operations.
- Operate and perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on municipal vehicles and equipment.
- Assist with basic construction, repair, and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Maintain accurate records and comply with all safety procedures, operational policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Interact professionally with the public and respond to inquiries in a courteous manner.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Participate in training and certification programs, including courses related to water and wastewater treatment operations.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the Public Works Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker classification.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Grade 12 graduation or equivalent (GED).
- Valid British Columbia Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Experience operating heavy equipment and municipal machinery.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
- Knowledge of safe work practices and workplace safety regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, and the public.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Due to operational and emergency call-out requirements, the successful candidate must be able to report to work within 30 minutes of notification and therefore is expected to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the City of Greenwood.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and certification programs supported by the City of Greenwood.
The following training and experience would be considered assets but are not required:
- Air Brake Endorsement.
- EOCP Certification in Water Distribution, Water Treatment, Wastewater Collection, or Wastewater Treatment, or the ability to obtain certification.
- Confined Space Awareness certification.
- Occupational First Aid certification.
- Electrical, plumbing, mechanical, welding, carpentry, or concrete placement/finishing experience.
- Chainsaw safety certification and tree maintenance experience.
- Additional EOCP certifications.
- Previous municipal public works experience.
