Bus Driver

PURPOSE: Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, the Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school, school activities and approved excursions. The Bus Driver supports a safe and positive transportation environment while ensuring assigned vehicles and the bus compound are maintained in a clean, safe and operational condition. This is a full-time permanent position in alignment with the school calendar year. The Bus Driver works primarily in the field and requires extensive local travel.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Cowichan Tribes offers excellent health and dental benefits and pension plan, with benefits eligibility beginning after one month of employment and pension plan eligibility after three months. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $33.46-$35.48 per hour.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Transportation & Safety
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements
- Safely transport students to and from school, educational activities, cultural events and approved excursions
- Ensure the safety and well-being of students during transportation activities
- Enforce bus safety rules, expectations and standards while maintaining appropriate student conduct
- Support positive student behaviour and address concerns in accordance with established procedures
- Document student incidents, concerns and accidents and report them to the Transportation Supervisor as required
- Support students, Bus Monitors and school staff to ensure safe and effective transportation services
- Comply with Cowichan Tribes Transportation Program policies and procedures, the BC Motor Vehicle Act and all applicable transportation regulations
- Other related duties as required
Vehicle, Equipment & Facility Maintenance- Maintain assigned vehicles in a safe, clean and roadworthy condition
- Ensure vehicles are adequately fueled and equipped with required safety equipment and supplies
- Immediately report vehicle defects, maintenance concerns, safety hazards or operational issues to the Transportation Supervisor
- Complete required trip logs, inspection reports and maintenance documentation accurately and in a timely manner
- Clean and maintain bus interiors and exteriors
- Perform light janitorial and general upkeep duties within the bus compound and surrounding work areas as required
- Secure and deliver lost and found items in accordance with established procedures
- Other related duties as required
Administrative & Program Support- Assist with transportation route planning, scheduling and transportation-related data collection and reporting
- Maintain accurate transportation records and documentation
- Support the Transportation Supervisor with transportation program operations and special projects as assigned
- Attend and participate in mandatory training and professional development as required
- Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)
- Grade 12 graduation or equivalent
- Valid BC Class 1 or Class 2 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement
- Valid Level 1 First Aid Certification
- Minimum 2 years of professional driving experience, preferably involving student transportation
- Demonstrated safe driving record with a satisfactory Driver's Abstract
- Experience working with children and youth is considered an asset
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance

- Ability to safely operate school buses and respond appropriately to emergencies and unexpected situations
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, staff and community members
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professionalism, sound judgment and discretion
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong conflict resolution and student behaviour management skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage competing responsibilities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Knowledge of student transportation safety practices, applicable legislation and safe driving procedures
- Knowledge of the Cowichan Tribes community and local transportation routes
- Knowledge of Cowichan culture, customs, traditions and language or a willingness to learn
