$37.37 to $38.49 per hour (NEE: 18) to
$40.65 to $41.87 per hour (NEE: 21)

Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. Malahat Nation is looking for the right candidate to join our Community Programs Department.

PURPOSE: Reporting to the Director of Community Programs, the Education Liaison will provide supports to children, youth, families, and staff in navigating the public education system (K to 12) to foster better educational outcomes for the children and youth we serve. The main purpose of this role is to advocate and help students succeed by developing and maintaining relationships with including but not limited to students, parents and / or guardians, teachers, administrators, and community agencies.
This position is a full-time, permanent position which requires majority of the work executed in community, as well as moderate local travel within the local School District 79 as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Education Liaison between Students, Parents and School District
- Assist families and advise on education and school issues that may arise
- Attend monthly check in meetings with Education Employment and Training Coordinator and School District 79
- Organize events and activities that support families i.e. parent info sessions, parent teacher meet n greets with local schools, other school and / or community events hosted by Malahat Nation
- Oversee gathering and tracking of sharing of information agreements from parents
- Review student Individual Education Plan (IEP) and general student learning support plans, to ensure wrap around supports are provided for students
- Collaboratively support in the creation of Personal Life Plan (PLP) for students through their education
- Direct and support students and families to access schools, community and government resources that support the pursuit of educational and career goals
- Provide literacy support programming and or homework groups for students and student family groups
- Provide 1-on-1 student supports as needed
Local Education Agreement (LEA)
- Assist in the achievement of the goals of the Malahat Nation and School District 79 Local Education Agreement (LEA) including organizing LEA working group meetings, agenda creation, tracking of minutes and communication
- Provide awareness and share information of the LEA to parents and teachers
Communication & Engagement
- Provide a forum for focus groups and information sharing for parents and community through monthly parenting meetings and focus sessions on education
- At the request of parents/ guardians, provide meeting support with parents, students, teachers and support staff
- Facilitate building relationships between families and the school
- Consult and collaborate with teachers, school counsellors, support staff and Malahat Nation Education staff as needed
- Advocacy at a district and provincial level for adherence to the LEA, TRC recommendations and UNDRIP
Administration & Reporting
- Provide monthly progress reports to Director of Community Programs, including but not limited to a year-end fiscal overview report to Malahat Nation Chief and Council and School District 79 Board
- Track and monitor student progress in collaboration with School District 79
- Maintain records and documents relating to family/ student connections and school/student meetings
- Identify grants and other funding opportunities for the programs/events and prepare funding proposals as needed under the supervision and collaboration with the Director of Community Programs
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Indigenous Perspective:
Western Ways:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to education, arts, sciences, or humanities; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Current CPR and standard First Aid training required
- Current Criminal Record Check (CRC) including vulnerable sector search is required
- Valid BC Driver’s License and driver’s abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle is required
Other:
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working within the education system i.e. educational assistant, counselor, student support worker, or administrator, teacher on call, and / or tutor
- Experience working in an Indigenous community with children and youth in either an educational environment child and youth counselling, child and youth care work or social work or equivalent
- Experience with family and community outreach an asset
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of BC’s Education System and strong connections with the education sector
- Experience and knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion issues impacting children, youth, and families
- Culturally responsive to the needs of a diverse population of children and youth i.e. Indigenous, Inuit, and Métis
- Student advocacy and connecting people with services and programs
- Basic to Intermediate computer skills for Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite Programs i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.
- Well developed problem-solving and mediation skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to share information in a clear, concise, and accurate manner
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Ability to speak and connect about difficult topics
- Take a positive approach to problem solving
- Ability to maintain and respect confidentiality of students and families
- Strong ability to set and follow personal and professional boundaries
- Experience working both independently and in a team, to create a positive, supportive and flexible work culture
- Confidence in working with children and youth
