Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II

Salary Range/ Wage Rate: $41.83 hourly plus 6.25% deferred compensation (2024 wage rates)
This role receives an additional 6.25% deferred compensation on hours worked. The additional 6.25% can be taken as compensation or time off.
Our Liquid Waste Services Department is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II who will be part of a team of Wastewater Treatment Operators at the Lions Gate and North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant. Candidates must be experienced in wastewater treatment regulatory compliance as well as experienced in being compliant with WorkSafe BC regulations.
You are: A dedicated, hardworking individual who can work well on their own and as a team player, in an operator capacity. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary, along with proficiency using various tools and computer applications common to the industry. Candidates should have a combination of related education and hands-on experience in wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance. A municipal wastewater treatment plant operator level II certificate is required for the position with an expectation that the successful candidate be willing to progress towards EOCP operator Level III certification within the first year.
This role: (The duties described hereunder are intended to be representative of the position and are not to be considered all inclusive.)
- Assists in the operation and monitoring of equipment throughout the plant.
- Performs and assists in the maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment, such as pumps, motors, valves, instruments, etc.
- Performs in a variety of process sampling operations and simple laboratory tests and interprets the results for efficient plant operation.
- Lubricates and cleans machinery and equipment; performs “housekeeping” and general maintenance work throughout the plant.
- Assists in maintaining operating records.
- Operates ancillary equipment such as trucks, small tractors, lawn mowers, pressure washers, etc.
- Assists in the training of junior staff. Maintains technical currency relative to wastewater treatment and related ancillary systems.
- Conducts tours and answers queries from the general public visiting the plant.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems and takes remedial action or alerts superior to same.
- May act in the capacity of a senior Operator when required.
- Assists in the development of documentation for work-related procedures.
- Works in compliance with all District safety policies, procedures and WCB regulations.
To be successful, you have:
- Grade 12 education or equivalent.
- Minimum one (1) year experience as a Class I MWWT Certified Operator.
- Possess or be able and qualified to secure British Columbia EOCP Class II MWWT Operators Certification. Demonstrated willingness and ability to undertake additional training relating to the duties of the position including progress towards WWTPO IV Certification. The highest EOCP MWWT Certificate or recognized reciprocal equivalent achieved shall be maintained in good standing and a copy of the Certificate shall be filed in the employee file in Human Resources as proof of eligibility.
- British Columbia Boiler Operator or higher level certification for Plants where certification of Operators is required for compliance with the Power Engineers and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act of British Columbia. If no Boiler Operator certification is held, a demonstrated willingness and ability to obtain it.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively use computer applications related to the position and duties.
- Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to effectively instruct and guide the work of others.
- Sound knowledge of process equipment.
- Sound knowledge of the occupational hazards, WCB regulations, safety policies and procedures applicable to the position.
- Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
- Willingness and ability to adapt to rotating shift work and/or be available for standby duty if required.
- Valid B.C. driver’s license.
