Main Function: Responsible for the supervision, work direction, and guidance of Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter staff and volunteers, ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient operation and maintenance of the animal shelter and daily care of animals.
Characteristic Duties: Under the general supervision of the Manager of By-Law and Animal Care and Control or designate.
- Oversee, organize, and participate in shelter activities, including daily care of animals, oversee foster homes and maintenance duties all while promoting excellent customer service.
- Coordinate fundraising, social media and like events, ensuring the promotion of animals ready for adoption, escalating issues and/or concerns to the co-ordinator or/designate as required.
- Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with established procedures and requirements and aassists in the development of operating policies and procedures.
- Prepare work schedules, assign work, and provide direction and guidance to staff and volunteers in accordance with policy and procedures. Develop, provide, and/or coordinate training. Provide routine updates to management, while maintaining a positive team environment.
- Oversee and participate, as required, in animal care services and minor health care treatments, and where necessary, the supply of injections, and medical care under the support and direction of the manager and/or a veterinarian or designate.
- Oversee and participate in physical and behavioural assessments of animals. Perform cursory examinations on animals upon intake. Identify and report animal health concerns to the co-ordinator and make decisions as to the dietary needs and adoptability of animals based on temperament and medical issues.
- Assume responsibility and handle animals, as required, and restrain hard to control animals, all while ensuring animal handling standards utilizing humane tools, equipment, and positive reinforcement techniques with shelter animals.
- Ensure all interior and exterior shelter areas meet standards and all related equipment is in good condition; maintain, repair, and replace equipment as needed.
- Oversee and maintain all administrative duties related to customer service, the intake and outcome of animals, ordering supplies, ensuring record keeping and inventory is maintained to shelter standards.
- Perform typing, filing, and miscellaneous clerical duties. Complete written reports and forms as required, including providing statistical information, accident/incident reports, etc. Prepare and review all invoices to ensure they are correct and posted as per standard operating procedures. Obtain quotes and assist the co-ordinator with decisions related to veterinarian care and shelter operations.
- Coordinate and participate in events, projects, outreach, volunteer, and foster programs related to animal services. Work collaboratively with community partners. Promote responsible pet ownership.
- Coordinate and participate in the transport of animals, shelter supplies, donations, using City of Greater Sudbury (CGS) fleet vehicle provided as necessary.
- Act as management’s representative in the grievance procedure in accordance with the respective collective agreement.
- Assist in the hiring, promoting, firing, and disciplining of personnel. Conduct performance appraisals and salary reviews as required.
- Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS’s Safety Manual and the applicable provincial legislation listed therein.

Qualifications:
Education and Training:
- College diploma in a related field from a community college with Canadian accreditation (e.g., Animal Care related field and/or Public Policy or Business).
Experience:
- Minimum of two and a half (2.5) years up of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or other animal related facility, plus one (1) year experience in a supervisory role.
OR
Education And Training:
- Successful completion of secondary school (grade XII) education.
- Additional educational initiatives to update and expand competencies.
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or other animal related facility, plus one (1) year experience in a supervisory role.
Knowledge Of:
- Animal services programs, regulations, and legislation pertaining to animals (e.g., municipal by-laws, applicable provincial legislation such as the Dog Owners' Liability Act, Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) regulations, and the Canadian Standards of Care in Animal Shelters, etc.).
- Best practices and legislation within areas of responsibility.
Abilities To:
- Coach and develop others and foster a strong team environment through strong leadership skills.
- Work in a customer service environment with excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and conflict management skills, dealing effectively with all levels of staff, the public, and external contacts in person, by telephone, and in writing.
- Handle and facilitate escalated issues and/or disputes with members of the public and utilize mediation or escalated tactics to successfully resolve conflicts.
- Apply strong organizational skills to multi-task in order to effectively carry out the various duties and responsibilities in a highly demanding work environment with minimal supervision and direction.
- Take initiative, show good judgement in decision making, and work well under time constraints.
- Work with computer software and administrative systems in a Windows environment (e.g., shelter or clinic software, file maintenance, word processing, spreadsheet applications, information input and retrieval, etc.).
- Recognize, deal effectively, and make decisions related to adoptability with a diversity of animals, problems and behaviours with the experience of medicating animals and handling feral, aggressive, and under socialized animals.
Personal Suitability:
- Mental and physical fitness to perform essential job functions; demonstrate satisfactory physical abilities matching job requirements (e.g., standing for long periods, lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 40 lbs., restraining large dogs weighing up to 150 lbs. and feral cats, etc.).
- Must be physically capable of completing assigned duties, work outdoors in all weather conditions and exposure to unpleasant odours, noise, various allergens, and animal feces.
Language:
- Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
- French verbal skills highly desirable; written skills an asset.
Other Requirements:
- Provide, at own cost, a Criminal Reference Check.
- Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and personal insurance coverage.

Development opportunity range of pay: $2,574.60 to $3,033.10 bi-weekly (Subject to Review). The successful candidate will be paid at the reduced range until the minimum qualifications have been met.
