Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.
Job Overview:
Under the direction of the Train Engineer assists in the operation and maintenance of the steam locomotives to ensure safe and enjoyable transportation for passengers within the Heritage Park. This position is safety critical and responsible for the boiler control. This position involves assisting in the maintenance and operation of the train's steam engine, whilst ensuring compliance with safety standards, and collaborating with the train crew to create an enjoyable experience for Heritage Park visitors.
Responsibilities:
Train Operations
- Perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure the engine's proper functioning and reliability
- Assist in the start-up, operation, and shutdown of the train's steam engine
- Monitor and manage the firebox to maintain optimal steam pressure to support engine performance
- Maintains the water level in the locomotive boiler and the fire in the firebox
- Maintain accurate records of fuel usage, maintenance tasks, and any incidents related to the engine
- Work closely with maintenance personnel to address any technical issues or perform routine inspections
- Assist in minor repairs or adjustments to the engine as directed
- Monitor fuel levels and assist in maintaining an inventory of necessary supplies for the engine and reporting any fuel shortages or maintenance needs promptly to the appropriate personnel
- Ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians by checking the track for obstructions, checking the train for the dragging of loose objects, making certain the tracks are clear of people and addressing any problems immediately in an appropriate manner
- Interpret signals and relay messages to the Train Engineer
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines related to the operation of the train's engine
- Follow emergency procedures and respond promptly in the event of engine-related issues or other emergencies
- Adhere to emergency procedures on the train, coordinating the emergency response by directing the Train Crew and alerting the Chief Engineer and other relevant personnel of the emergency situation
- Provides Customer Service and information to visitors as necessary in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Notes and reports any property damage or unsafe working conditions.
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors with a customer-focused approach, providing courteous and friendly customer service and information to enhance the overall visitor experience
- Operate the engine as directed if required

Required Qualifications:
- Enrolment in or completion of 4th Class Power Engineering certification is required
- Completion of Heritage Park in-house railway certification (HROR) is required prior to operation (training will be provided)
- Previous experience in a similar role, preferably working with steam or diesel engines is preferred
- Prior experience working in a COR (Certificate of Recognition for Health and Safety) certified organization is an asset
- Knowledge of safety procedures related to engine operations
- Keen attentiveness to surroundings and strong observational skills to ensure safety protocols are followed, including vigilant monitoring for pedestrians, obstacles, or potential hazards within the operating environment
- The abilities to detect problems and solve them quickly and efficiently are necessary
- Excellent demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written)
- Commitment to continuous learning and development
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting
- All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through a Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
Special Clothing and Equipment:
- Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park;
- Employees are eligible for a CSA-approved footwear allowance to ensure their safety and compliance with workplace regulations
Special Working Conditions:
- The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors
- This position is physically demanding, and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items
- This position requires a considerable amount of walking, standing for long periods of time, walking through the Park for extended periods and other strenuous duties
Hours of Work:
- The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week
- The schedule will generally consist of 2 working days followed by 4 rest days
- Holiday and evening work may be required
