The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is Canada’s sixth national museum. Our mission is to share the ongoing story of immigration to Canada—past to present and coast to coast to coast. The Museum is located in the Pier 21 national historic site at the Halifax seaport where nearly one million immigrants landed in Canada from 1928 to 1971.
We have an opening for the role of
Cataloguer. This is a temporary role for 12 months and will be located on site at the Museum in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Collections and Digital Preservation, the Cataloguer will work toward a goal of cataloguing newly acquired digital and physical items for the Collection.
This position will involve the registration, documentation and storage of both physical and digital objects in accordance with professional standards and best practices.
The Cataloguer will work in coordination with other Collections department team members to establish and preserve relationships between the Museum’s collection through a process of collections-based research and the use of a collection database.
Key Tasks
- Create and update digital and physical cataloguing records for digital and physical items in the Collection;
- Records management including filing, scanning, and creation of cataloguing records and associated documents;
- Standardize records in accordance with the Museum’s practices;
- Complete condition reports as required;
- Prepare items for long-term storage and preservation;
- Physically number artifacts;
- Assist in ensuring the general care, preservation, preventative conservation and security of the Museum’s collection;
- Report to the Manager of Collections and Digital Preservation any changes in condition or other points of concern;
- Teamwork and coordination with other Collections team members;
- Other tasks as required
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge & Experience
Skills And Qualifications –Required
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Public History, Anthropology or related field;
- Graduate certificate or diploma in Museum Studies or equivalent;
- Minimum of 1-year experience working with physical or digital Museum collections;
- Experience with handling and housing artifacts and archival material;
- Demonstrated understanding of museum principles and best practices;
- Demonstrated research skills, including the ability to locate, evaluate, analyze and synthesize information from diverse sources;
- Experience related to Canadian intellectual property rights research, specifically copyright status;
- Established experience with content management systems (CMSs) or other large searchable database software and media editing software such as Adobe Photoshop;
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills: ability to plan, organize, prioritize and meet deadlines;
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in the handling of confidential matters.
Skills And Qualifications – Desired
- Experience working with digital collections and restrictions / permissions issues related to processing digitized and born-digital material
- Excellent knowledge of Canadian immigration patterns and history.
- The ability to communicate effectively in both official languages is an asset.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- Combination of work in an office environment as well as within collection storage spaces. Work will be done on both an individual and team basis.
- May require lifting and moving objects from 20 to 50 pounds. Must be able to safely climb inclines, negotiate uneven surfaces, stairs and ladders.
- Occasional use of hand tools and basic power tools may be required.
Compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and includes a comprehensive benefit package, including the public service pension plan.
The salary range for this role is: $43,035 - $52,599.
