The Residential Driver will be responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously providing waste removal services to customers. The driver will collect solid waste or recyclables on curbside and/or backdoor routes and transporting to post-collection facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a residential/recycling collection truck, side-load, and/or rear-load truck with associated equipment and hydraulic systems to collect solid waste and recyclables on assigned routes.
- Load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the truck's rear or side, ensuring proper handling and safety.
- Operate the truck's compacting equipment to efficiently compress waste inside the vehicle.
- Follow prescribed operating techniques to reduce the risk of mechanical failures.
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections, document daily reports, route sheets, and any other required documentation.
- Communicate vehicle issues to the mechanic and supervisor promptly.
- Maintain route quality standards set by management.
- Comply with safety standards, rules, and regulations (federal, state, local, and company-specific).
- Maintain a clean vehicle, including interior and exterior.
- Identify and tag prohibited waste items, removing them from the waste carts.
- Oversee and manage assigned helpers (if applicable).
- Ensure the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times (e.g., gloves, reflective vest, safety glasses, work boots).
- Report all accidents or incidents to supervisors immediately.
- Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with customers or the public during routes.
- Keep accurate records of services performed and inventory levels for containers and carts.
- Collaborate with supervisors to improve route efficiencies and operations.
- Attend safety meetings and any required training sessions.
- Work overtime if required and perform additional duties as requested by management.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
- At least one (1) year of commercial driving experience or a CDL school certificate.
- Must meet company's criteria for safety-sensitive roles.
- Demonstrated ability to safely drive the truck and operate its equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of truck components and basic maintenance for safe operation.
- Ability to control the truck and maneuver in tight spaces using mirrors.
- Recognize unsafe waste materials (e.g., gasoline, flammable items).
- Effective communication skills for interaction with internal teams and customers.
- Ability to read and interpret documents and maps.
- Capacity to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to adapt to changes and continuously improve performance.
- Physical ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds using proper techniques.
- Ability to coordinate multiple limbs while operating the vehicle or handling equipment.
- Knowledge and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
Physical/Mental Demands:
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and balance.
- Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to regularly lift up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Driving may require sitting for long periods (up to 75% of the time).
- Ability to work in loud environments.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to loud noise, extreme weather conditions, mechanical parts, toxic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Work is primarily outdoors, up to 100% of the time.
- Constant work within traffic conditions.
- Occasional work in high or precarious places.
