The Children’s Cottage Society, established in Calgary in 1986, provides crisis nursery, community respite, and family support programs to more than 3,500 children a year. The Society’s mission is to “Build strong children and safe, nurturing families through prevention programs and support services” and our vision is “Resilient children blossom in healthy families.”
The individual in this position will support parents with newborns up to the age of 6 months who are experiencing stress and require some respite assistance to better meet their needs and their children’s needs.
Hours: Part Time - Monday to Thursday (18 hours per week)
Location of work: 1804 Home Road NW, Calgary AB, T3B 1H1
Salary: $24,960 /year plus benefits
Qualifications:
• Completion of postpartum doula training
• Minimum of 2 years of infant care experience.
• Some post-secondary training in Early Childhood Development would be an asset.
• Completed Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Record Check with satisfactory results.
• Standard First Aid and Child/Infant CPR (CPR Level B).
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle.
Responsibilities:
• Interact with infants/children:
o Care for infants and children in a positive, gentle, sensitive manner.
o Have an awareness of age-appropriate and developmentally; appropriate activities and implement while caring for infants/children.
o Interact with infants and engage them in activities that support optimal development when they are not asleep.
• Interact with parents:
o Introduce parents to the program and its services / expectations.
o Assist parents by providing respite childcare in the parent’s home. o Set goals with parents and help them achieve their goals.
o Conduct and discuss developmental assessments (ASQ screenings).
o Help families connect with community resources as needed.
- Report to and Inform Children’s Cottage In Home Programs Supervisor:
o Receive referral information from Supervisor.
o Attend supervision sessions with the Nurturing Newborns Supervisor monthly.
• Support Nurturing Newborns Volunteers:
o Arrange details of respite shift with volunteer.
o Provide mentorship, support and direct supervision to volunteer.
• Record Keeping:
o Complete data entry into NewOrg Database in a timely way and keep client files up to date.
o Complete mileage reimbursement forms and hand in to Supervisor monthly.
o Keep work schedule in Outlook calendar up to date.
Skills & Abilities:
• Responsible, dependable and have a non-judgmental attitude.
• Able to work independently.
• An understanding of the developmental needs of infants.
• An ability to guide and support parents.
• Knowledge of services and resources for families with young children.
• Can comply with a non-smoking expectation for the duration of work shifts.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Competence with electronic technology
