SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Reports to the Traffic Service Foreman/Woman. Fabricates, installs and repairs signs; paints roadway markings.
GENERAL DUTIES
Installs, replaces, maintains and removes overhead and at grade traffic signs (regulatory, warning, information, construction etc.).
Fabricates signs, posts, barricades and road barriers; hand and screen painting.
Prepares location for sign post installation by breaking surfaces, mixing cement.
Carries out sign checks such as reflectivity, obstruction and maintenance and records activity on data software system. Input data for pavement markings, bike lane installation and asset collection into GIS layer app.
Communicates with representatives of utilities to determine service location prior to sign installation. Communicates with contractors/tender representatives.
Erects signs, sign supports and barricades.
Performs traffic control using hand-held signs.
Reads design prints for signs and pavement markings and sign layout.
Lays out and applies pre-marks for paint and durable markings for crosswalks, stop bars, turn arrows and various stencils and longitudinal lines. Removes lines as required.
Drives specialized vehicles; loads and unloads equipment and materials.
Operates equipment such as computerized paint striper, aerial boom truck, auger truck, paint marking machine, hydraulic post pounder, hydraulic hoist, pneumatic pounder, forklift, cement mixer, jackhammer, and sign fabrication equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicle.
Operates hand and power tools such as drills, impact gun, saws, wrenches, pipe cutter and threader.
Cuts and refurbishes pipe.
Completes forms such as stock control, time sheets, vehicle daily log, hours of work, and work orders.
Cleans and maintains shop and garbage area; dispose garbage.
Cleans equipment with solvents.
Assists with stock inventory such as paints and supplies.
Trains new employees.
Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the responsibilities of the position.
Works in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess previous demonstrated experience in the use of hand and power tools such as drills, saws, wrenches, screwdrivers, pipe cutter and threaders including ability to provide preventative maintenance to tools.
- Must have previous demonstrated experience reading and interpreting roadway design drawings.
- Must possess ability to read and interpret by-laws relevant to the operations of the signs and markings section.
- Ability to accurately complete forms including work orders and relevant documentation related to the duties of the position.
- Experience in traffic sign and post installation and roadway pavement markings preferred.
- Must possess a Class "D" Licence with a "Z" endorsement.
- Must possess Basic computer knowledge with keyboarding and data entry skills.
- Must be able to work various scheduled shifts in all outdoor environments and seasons.
- Must be able to climb into and out of aerial buckets with a maximum lifting capacity of 300 lbs. and operate from aerial device at heights ranging from 3-10 meters.
- Must be able to regularly lift up to 70 lbs.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES A VALID CLASS "DZ” DRIVER'S LICENCE AND PROOF THEREOF IS REQUIRED AFTER HIRE.
NOTE: Days and night shifts as required.
