PACT (Pearson Accelerator Construction Team) is a General Partnership of Alberici, Amico, Kenaidan, and Obayashi, supported by design partners Egis, Mott MacDonald, and Weston Williamson + Partners. Together, we are delivering Accelerator, a major program of Pearson LIFT (Long-term Investment in Facilities and Terminals), Toronto Pearson's infrastructure development plan. This multi-year program is designed to address immediate passenger growth demands while preparing Canadas largest airport for the future of air travelincluding critical upgrades to airfield and infrastructure, greenhouse gas reduction initiatives, modernization of Terminals 1 and 3, and the creation of a world-class passenger experience.
JOB SUMMARY
The Environmental Director plays a key role in ensuring environmental compliance, sustainability, and stewardship throughout all phases of the PACT project. By leading environmental initiatives, enforcing regulatory requirements, and fostering collaboration with project teams and stakeholders, the Environmental Director contributes to the successful delivery of a sustainable and environmentally responsible infrastructure project. The role ensures a safe, efficient, and compliant project environment while working cross-functionally with the Health and Safety team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and oversee the implementation of both the Environmental Management System (EMS) and the Sustainability Management Plan (SMP), as well as any other sub-plans in compliance with regulatory requirements and contractual obligations.
- Review project designs to ensure environmental compliance and conformity with applicable regulations and standards during the development phase.
- Develop and conduct environmental training programs for the project team, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure awareness of environmental policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Participate in Working Group Meetings as needed.
- Establish environmental monitoring protocols to track project impacts and performance against environmental targets and objectives.
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, and management teams to deliver a unified project that prioritizes environmental sustainability and compliance.
- Ensure that the management plans address key environmental aspects, such as protection of the environment, contamination disposal, responsible excavation and earthworks practices, and vegetation restoration.
- Enforce contractual requirements related to environmental protection and ensure adherence to project schedules.
- Collaborate with design teams to incorporate environmental considerations into project plans and specifications.
- Promote a culture of environmental stewardship and compliance among project personnel.
- Provide leadership and direction to the environmental team, including environmental engineers, specialists, coordinators, and consultants.
- Oversee environmental quality assurance and control measures throughout the implementation phase to minimize environmental risks and impacts.
- Identify opportunities to integrate sustainable solutions and practices into project design, construction, and operation phases.
- Establish environmental monitoring protocols to track project impacts and performance against environmental targets and objectives.
- Prepare and submit environmental reports to regulatory agencies, project stakeholders, and senior management as required.
- Conduct environmental risk assessments to identify potential hazards, vulnerabilities, and liabilities associated with project activities.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to minimize environmental impacts and liabilities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Engage with project directors and relevant stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, community groups, and environmental organizations, to ensure alignment of environmental objectives, as well as address any concerns, solicit feedback, and build positive relationships.
- Represent the project in environmental forums, public hearings, and stakeholder meetings to promote transparency and accountability.
- Stay informed about emerging environmental regulations, technologies, and best practices to enhance project sustainability and compliance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position will be based at our office in Mississauga, Ontario, with visits to the Airport site as required. This position is 5 days per week. Your regular work schedule will generally be Monday to Friday during site hours.From time to time, operational needs may require you to work outside those hours. All employees must complete a RAIC and Criminal background check upon joining the company.
DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES
- Bachelors or Masters in Environmental Science, Environmental or Civil Engineering, Sustainability, or related field.
- 15+ years in environmental compliance, sustainability, or EHS leadership roles.
- Holds professional experience in large complex infrastructure programs in an operational or aviation environment.
- Relevant professional designation (PE, CEM, LEED AP, ENV SP) is required.
- Certified in ISO 14001, CSP, CIH, or other relevant credentials is considered an asset.
- Deep understanding of federal, provincial, and global environmental regulations.
- Expertise in sustainability policies, carbon management, ESG strategy, and reporting.
- Demonstrable experience in sustainable resource management, materials efficiency, and circular economy.
- Demonstrable experience in managing large multi-party teams and assessing the competency requirements of the team.
- Strong technical capability in all project phases, including design, planning, construction, operations, and maintenance with ability to solve complex problems including data analytics to support solution identification.
- Experience leading or playing a key role in assessment, permit applications, compliance audits, and other relevant key activities.
- Experience with identifying hazards and implementing mitigation strategies.
- Experience with coordinating preparedness and response plans for environmental incidents.
- Experience with aligning environmental goals with business objectives.
- Fosters a continuous improvement (Lean/Kaizen) mindset for operational efficiency.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Familiarity with GTAA or other major airport procedures is considered an asset.
- Valid drivers license and eligibility for RAIC clearance required.
